Was recently gifted a Snapper C3203 snow blower which had only been used twice - 14 years ago

. After finding a manual online calling for 32:1 mix, I mixed that ratio up, cleared the gunk out of the carburetor, and got it running. While I had the shroud off, I noticed a tag inside saying it was a Tecumseh engine, and it called for a 50:1 mix. I'm guessing the additional oil mostly fouls the plug more and makes more of that lovely 2-stroke fragrance, but any downside to using 50:1?
 
I have a Chinese gas-powered jackhammer that specifies 20:1

It came with a bottle of oil that looks like melted yak fat.

I mixed the first tank at 25:1 with GOOD TCW-III oil to flush all the metal shavings out with.
Lots of black liquid exhaust "goo".... but no fouled plugs!

Have since switched to 50:1 like all my other equipment.

Amsoil synthetic 2 cycle oil is like 100:1?
 
I run 32 to 1 in my ope the string trimmers seem to have more power with more oil. I trim about 3 acres for fore safety.
 
40:1 and don't use a TCW3 rated oil for water cooled engines .

I use Amsoil Saber in all my OPE but I'd never try it at 100:1 except maybe in an RC application or a small trimmer .

More oil = better ring seal. Its a fine line finding the point at which they foul plugs and spooge but I'm always for more oil in any 2 stroke application, especially the racing ones that are ran hard.

THere are articles on the web showing documented testing all the way down to 10:1 ratios making power gains on a dyno due to ring seal and compression gain.The trick with a two stroke and ratios is to get it JETTED properly to run the mix! Most folks don't realize when you add more oil you lean out the jetting, and take away oil you richen up the mix.
 
racin4ds has it right. Read Two Stroke Performance Tuning by AG Bell, and the dyno tests are quite clear that more oil makes more power.

I always run OPE richer until I just see oil dampness in the exhaust, meaning that there's ample oil on the exhaust side of the piston/ring assembly.


oil burns, so it's not like it's removing combustibles from the chamber.

While I read what you said.

doubt he is rejetting it so therefore it is confusing to talk about using more oil and it being richer.. as the fuel mixture is actually LEANER with more oil and the same jet.

All that aside.

you can always run 40:1 use a Good api TC rated, jaso FD oil.

you can always run 40:1 use a Good api TC rated, jaso FD oil.

richer in terms of oil mix...around 30:1 in everything I've got at the moment.

The oil is combustible, so you are not leaning it out as some people seem to think that the oil displaces fuel, and leads to too much oxygen (stoichiometrically lean), which can only be the case if the oil was incombustible.
 
32:1/ 40:1 or 50:1wont hurt a thing. This is as fruitless a debate as 10w30 v.s 5w20. Truth is I like 32:1. It depends more on the type of oil then the motor your using it in that and make sure you use a TC rated oil in air cooled engines. TCW creates hard carbon.
 
Thanks all, guess I'll see if it's less stinky with 50:1. It seemed to be a little lean when I first started it, but I think the jet may have still had some gunk in it. Today it was running evenly whereas I had to pull the choke slightly to get it to run steady yesterday.
 
All I know is what has worked for me. I'm not God's gift to mechanical issues. My brother has gone through 2 Stihls at least In the time we've had saws. The Farm Boss turned 40 this yr and I used it last week. I'm sorta like the ancient sword makers making steel swords. By ritual

PS, I used the last of the '16 mix in my 4 stroke snowblower last snow event. The FB is running on 6 month old mix.
