Got a 199 Civic here and took it for a test drive and 4th and 5th gears are making a noticable whirring noise when I am using them.

When I take my foot off of the gas or disengage the clutch it goes away.

Where do I check the fluid on the Civic tranny?

Probably has a Drain Plug and a Fill Plug. I know with my Focus, you pull the Fill plug and put your finger in and it should be right below the opening. Im sure the Honda cant be too different. I think you are lucky...you can use motor oil to fill it up.

Found out how to check it through the owner's manual and it was down half a liter.

Filled it to the fill plug line and all is good.

Thanks guys.

Blazer LT, that was quite a bit low, considering that transmission only holds 1.75 quarts. What fluid are you using, and when was the last time you changed it? -Joe

It has to my knowledge never been changed but this is not my car but a friend that I am selling it for because he had to go out of the country for a job.

It calls for 10w30 topup oil and I didn't have that so I topped it up with synthetic 5w30 which is essentially the same seeing what I want is the 30 weight oil in there once it warms up.

Noise is all but gone and I do not know if the MTF has ever been changed.

Yea, I knew it was low seeing the amount of noise it was making but it didn't fail.

Ok, don't worry about it then. I was going to say that I have run some UOAs on the Honda MTF, which thinned out pretty bad at only 20,000 miles. Since it is not your car, no worries. -Joe

Yea, I am just selling it for him.

From the research I have done, Honda MTF is Valvoline 10w30 in a different bottle and is nothing special.

Hmm.....Please explain.

I found this out at a Honda enthusiest website and the person called to find out about the MTF and that is what he found out from Honda.

Blazer, I recently picked up a Honda (94 LX) and I'm looking for some decent Honda sites. Could you point me to that site? Thanks.

I don't have them anymore but do a search on google for honda performance or honda bolt ons and you should find some enthusiest sites.

BlazerLT, I had a '95 Civic Coupe. Great little car. Glad you found the plug OK.

Just so everyone knows, Honda MTF is NOT the same as Valvoline All-Climate. The base oil may be the same or similar (Group II, II+ or III) but Honda MTF has a great deal of barrier anti-wear adds (ZDDP) ... about like an SF or SG motor oil.

Valvoline All-Climate has one of the "skimpiest" barrier additive packages on the market ... much less than All-Climate.

There is a virgin sample of Honda MTF in the oil analysis section, I think.

For those generation Civics, I recommend Red Line MTL for best shift feel, especially in the cold.
