What would be the best oil to run in a 1996 Volvo 850 Turbo 5 Cyl? I was thinking like Rotella 5W40 synthetic or 15W40 conventional. Any suggestions?

I should have mentioned that the car will be used mostly for short trips, and it has around 200,000KM on it.
Is a HDEO required because of the turbo, or can you simply run a conventional 5W30 or similar?

No, an HDEO is not required. I don't even think it's a good idea. Which engine do you have in this thing? If it' the low-boost 2.4, I'd go with an oil that meets Honda's HTO-06 spec, so either Pennzoil Platinum or Mobil1 5W30, EP or regular, 5W30. Since you're doing mostly short trips, there's absolutely no benefit or need to use a thicker oil in this engine. The oil temps just don't get that hot in that engine, and viscosity is directly related to oil temps. Pennzoil Platinum 5W30 would probably be my first choice, but any of those would work well.

If you have the high-boost 2.3L, I'd go with an ACEA A3-rated oil, M1 0W40 would be my first choice based on availability and performance.

You do not need a 10W40 oil in this engine for your driving conditions, and you certainly don't need a high-mileage oil at that point. 200KM is just breaking in for that motor.

Thanks for the info. It has the 2.3L Turbo.

The manual reccommends oil "Meeting API specification SG, SG/CD, SH or Energy Conserving (EC) II" and the visosity chart calls for 5W30 for +20C and below, 5W40 for +40C and below, 15W40 for -15C and up, and 10W30 for -20C to +40C.

Very wide range of viscosity, but the 5W40 seems to cover the widest range, which is why I was thinking the Rotella T6 5W40. M1 0W40 is available here in the great white north, but it is $12 per liter. RT6 is $40 for 5L. PP 5W30 is about $45 for 5L.

The 2.3 turbo is quite hard on oil and I would definitely stay away from conventional. Rotella T6, Mobil1 0-40, M1 HM 10-40, and most other synthetics in the 5-40 range would work quite well. The 2.4L is much easier on oil and most 30-40wt conventionals are going to be fine.

Hard on oil? I have 200,000 miles on my '96 turbo Volvo 2.3 and it's running fine. I've been using Schaeffer syn 5W-40 with 10,000 mile oil drain intervals and very good analysis reports Before that I used Schaeffer syn blend 15W-40 @ 10k, and conventional 10W-30 @ 5,000 mile ODI. In a BC winter inland I'd use a syn 5W-30. In summer the 5W-40 or 15W-40 is great.

Rotella T6 5W-40 does not have a wide viscosity range with it's 169 VI (no higher than a 5W-30 syn) and it's way heavier than necessary for your application.

JOD summed it up well; any 5W-30 that meets the Honda HTO-06 turbo spec' is a good choice such as M1 5W-30 or PP/PU 5W-30.
Both of these oils are often on sale in the $30/5L range.

I had a 1986 Volvo 740 Turbo. The turbo had only oil cooling - they didn't have water cooling until 1987.

So I changed the oil a lot (every 3 months) with dino, took care not to let the turbo spool up until the temperature gauge was off the pin on cold starts, and always let it cool down before shutting off after a high speed run.

I expected the turbo to crater eventually but it didn't. I had the car for 17.5 years and 285,000 km of mixed city and highway driving and sold it to a friend some years ago. That's an average of 4071 km (2544 miles) per change. That engine with turbo is still going. It used a bit of oil (would be down a liter by change time) from new but it never increased. Volvo makes a tough engine.

Dino oil wasn't that good over much of my ownership period. Pick a sensible oil and change it at reasonable intervals and you should be golden.

I would only use 100% synthetic in a turbocharged gasoline engine.

As for what is best, I'm not 100% sure. I have been using Castrol Edge Gold in my turbo engine.
