Caliper slide pin bolts DO need to be replaced on some applications. Check the Factory Service Manual for your vehicle. On many VWs, they are stretch bolts (IIRC) and they must be replaced at every brake job.
Also, be sure to clean and adjust your rear brakes. This is VERY important if you have drum brakes in the rear.
