An external cooler would be a good idea, especially considering the way you use the truck.

In the shorter term, add a drain plug or a new pan with the plug to make future changes easier. The cooler line flush could also be done while installing a cooler. Then you would know exactly what fluid you have and how old it is.

I definitely want to add a pan with a drain plug.

I think the truck actually has a cooler after all. Hope the picture is clear enough....looks like one to me.
