This container ship hit a reef, and is now breaking up in a storm, fuel oil leaking and containers falling off. There is public anger at a tardy response, and now because of the storm it's too late...it's almost a matter of watching it all happen. Tauranga is our busiest port, and the beaches pristine and almost untouched by commercialism.

As a former muscle car owner I know his anguish. Beautiful car.

Yeah, I know tempest, Govt red tape made the ship run aground, and they are scapegoating the first and second officer to hide it. You are a biggie for taking responsibility...who's responsible for a ship in transit ?

If he did something truly irresponsible, like being drunk on the job, then he should be arrested. I've seen nothing in this article to indicate such a thing. I simply think this is a very rash arrest based on the information that is here. No thorough investigation to see what happened? If this was an accident then it should be more of a civil matter rather than criminal. Seems like the locals want a pound of flesh, rather than a dispassionate resolution.
