1965 Olds F85 2 speed automatic trans question

I recently acquired a very nice 1965 F85 Olds with a two speed Jetaway automatic trans which I think is very much similar to a Powerglide. The transmission leaks fluid when sitting. I replaced the pan gasket. An old timer mechanic told me that those transmissions had a tendency to leak when sitting but he could not remember why. Anybody familiar with the problem?

Front seal, rear seal, dipstick tube, Where the speedometer cable hooks up. That's the only other places I can think of right now.

What transmission fluid did you install? Remember these transmissions don't have a lock-up torque converter...they require a premium fluid. At least that is what I was told when I was changing the filter on the Turbo-Hydramatic on my 78 Pontiac Grand Prix...

If it only leaks when it sits still, it's probably the trans dip stick tube. The torque converter drains into the trans, thus raising the level to the tube's O ring. Try replacing the O ring.

Some high mileage Powerglides had a tendency to leak at the tailstock. Hard to detect unless on a lift.

My first car was a 65 F85 with a 330 4bbl and Jetaway mine leaked too but was never able to find it. 64-67 BOP A bodies are sweet as ----. I wish I still had mine.

NYEngineer is likely right. I had a 1957 powerglide. Seeps back from TC and literally rolls out the filler tube o-ring. Just start it weekly. No premium fluids needed--they didn't have those back then. any dex is fine. Heck, veggie oil'd probably work. AN INLINE FILTER CAN GREATLY HELP THIS TRANS!!

I had one of these transmissions in my '65 442...I wish I had that car now...the leak may be coming from the speedometer coupling...mine used to leak from there...a new gasket will take care of that...ps- the unit in your f-85 is probably a Super Turbine 300,not a Powerslide....good luck... tcp442
