Specks of what appears to be aluminum in the filter - Napa Gold (WIX). Fuel dilution is up even though we took a 1k mi trip 2-3 days before the oil change, and got the most recent software update. aluminum, iron and silicon all about half of FF dump, copper at 1/4. Tech notes on add-pack must be about sample #1, which I believe was Castrol edge 0w30. Manganese prob left over from the Edge.

OLM said oil change due in 600mi, spec’d for VW 504.

I’ll take a sample around 5k mi for the next analysis.

Was in Wal-Mart today and the only M1 that was sold out was the 0w-40 $22.67 for 5 qts. Great deal

This fuel dilution stuff is a mystery at that milage. That 5K check sounds like a good idea.

Seems to be a common issue with these vehicles/motors..

I’ve been getting it for $5.49/qt at Napa on sale, but that Walmart deal has me almost beat by $1/qt.

It is not mystery. It is first generation FSI engine. That technology dates back to 2003 when VW released 2.0 FSI in EU. VR6 3.6 followed in 2005 I think. All VW engines from that period are fuel dilution monsters. There is no any way around. Change oil every 5k, and use W40 weight.

There was another recent VR6 UOA on here with a lot of fuel dilution as well and resulting loss of viscosity as well.

Yeah, I may end up with a less expensive 40 weight and go w 5k. I’ll post a 4,500 mi sample in the not too distant future.

Always best bet is Castrol 0W40. I would go that bcs. lower SAPS compared to Mobil1 0W40. Both are exceptional oils, but M1 packs some serious SAPS, and DI engines do not like that.

I have an Atlas with the 3.6 - no way I'm going up near 10K with almost 100% short trips. They get too much fuel dilution with the shorter trips. That 0W40 looks hammered. 5K is the way with this vehicle/engine for short trip usage. I have LM Leichtlauf High Tech 5W40 in mine right now with Ceratec and will be doing a ~5K change at some point later this year and next in the queue is the M1 FSx2 5W40 with a spare quart of QSUD 5W40 and spare qt of LM LLHT 5W40...should be interesting! If you want to see some other UOAs I've posted mine here several times with an easy search.

This report was actually much better than the last, iron, copper and aluminum were all way down. Only the 2nd oil change, no need to freak out over break in metals. Oil dilution and shearing is normal on DI motors, and with the wear trending down, I personally would run the same interval again.

If the aluminum had been coming from bearings, your oil pressure would be in the toilet. Maybe just left over flashing from the casting process?
