Hello gentlemen and my neighbor across the street from me has a civic thats the same year and model(03' LX, 1.7L 4cyl) and he has lately been running the Rotella T 10w30 oil. He is running 5500 mile oci's. He asked me if this was ok and if it would hurt anything. His civic does not use any oil, does not burn or leak any oil. I helped him change spark plugs, and his valve cover gasket and the cylinder head area looked very clean. Thanks in advance and have a great weekend folks.

As long as he's not burning oil excessively, only impact is maybe a small power hit due to the higher viscosity compared to current "resource conserving" oils. He may also notice somewhat quieter hot running.
Those 7th gen civic luvs 5W20/5W30.

Yeah, he said his does not burn, leak any oil. His car is very clean inside and out as well. He has 180k on his civic, and had his timing belt done at 122k along with water pump and valve stem seals and cam seals. I told him I would personally use a good 5w20 conventional oil like Quaker State Conventional 5w20 which is what I am currently using for 5k oci's. He said he thought about using the T5 synthetic blend but its like $16 at wal mart, and the rotella t 10w30 conventional is like $12.99 a gallon at advance in my area.
This is appearantly what makes your neighbor sleep well at night. He is not hurting anything at all and may only be helping the engine a little bit in regards to the HDEO's additive package compared to a PCMO's add pkg.
Where your neighbor might benefit from just using a 5W20/5W30 PCMO is in the MPG and slight power output due to less heavy oil drag on the Civic's small crankshaft especially when the tempuratures turn colder. But, in warm temps, your neighbor may never notice. This is why I like lighter oils in small engines!

Yeah, he tells me he has been using this for about a year. Rotella T 10w30 conventional. I told him he may consider a 5w20 for winter, but he likes the rotella 10w30 conventional. He does a little more short trip driving than I do also.

Yeah, I was thinking about the Rotella 10w30 conventional last night, and still thinking about trying it for 5k oci. My civic has 125k on it now, does not use or leak or burn any oil. Replaced my weeping crank seal also.
Ran the Rotella 10w30 in the Yaris, It ran smooth but took a big power hit and I dont think the VVT liked it. The Civic VTEC does not care. That car would probably like the new 5w-20 MC-SS best.

Though, this car called for 5w30 or 10w30, PCMO back in 1992 API SG, so I'm not sure why the blend I ran felt so thick compared to the other multi-grade 30 oils I've ran.

Yeah, the neighbor said he was going to try some Quaker State Conventional after this current 5500 miles are up. I think that using the 5w20 I am in my own civic which is the standard single cam 1.7l 4cyl is ok myself. I still cant get over the guy that is using 5w40 rotella full synthetic though.

Thin? - at 50-60cSt its much thicker than a SAE50 would be at operating. Warm it to 190 F and see how thin it is then
