Ladies and Gents, I have a 2010 F150 with the 4.6 2v. I would like to switch to a 10,000 mile OCI. My driving is about 75-80% Highway or long distance (minimum 1hr, one way) driving, with the balance being in the Western NC mountains, locally. I am thinking of using Pennzoil Platinum and MC FL820S filter, change the filter at 5k, an replace the lost oil from the filter change. I will only buy stuff that I can get locally at Wally World, AZ, AAP etc, so sorry no Amsoil smirk The search function here is not exactly "user friendly", but was curious if anyone is doing anything similar or had a UOA to show some data from a similar experience. I rack up miles quickly, as I bought the truck new in March 2011 and already have 34k on the clock. I have 3 other vehicles, the wife's '08 Mustang GT, the son's '96 3.0 Ranger, and my '78 280Z. would like to cut down on the oil changes consuming so much time, and that used oil piles up quick....I need a waste oil furnace for my house smile any input is appreciated !

you are better off running it 7500 with no filter change. also whats the factory oci on it? If a warranty is applicable make sure you follow it.

First of all, don't change the filter at 5K. Waste of time and money. 10K OCIs are a snap with most engines. I've been doin it for decades with a quality synthetic.

Mobil 1 Synthetics are a good choice for 10,000. Mobil Extended Performance should give you plenty of cushion for 10,000 miles as it's rated for 15,000. In addition, Pennzoil Ultra and even Pennzoil Platinum should do the trick, all readily available at Walmart. Another good choice is Castrol Edge with Syntec or Castrol Edge with Titanium ( 15,000 mile oil )..Ofcoarse you have Royal Purples and Amsoils that are more pricey but excellent choices. Remember get a quality filter to go along with your 10,000 OCI so you don't have to change it until you change the oil..Recommendations: Mobil 1 EP, Bosch Distance Plus, Fram Extended Guard, Napa Platinum which are all extended drain type filters and a good filter that many say can do the job is PureOne made by Puralotor, but that isn't technically a Extended drain filter.

Good to see someone else on the forum from WNC. smile If it were me, I would use Pennzoil Ultra or Mobil 1 Extended Performance and a Bosch Distance + or Mobil 1 Extended Performance filter and not change the filter at 5K. They are just fine for a 10k OC.

What if you are under warranty and for example mine is 6,000 miles and it says in your owners manual says this" Do not exceeded 6,000 miles on oil and filter change". Surely this guys F-150 is under warranty. Even though it is highly doubtful there will be an engine failure due to going 10,000 miles, it could get ugly if there was an issue with the engine and they wanted to see you oil change records. Even though I believe they have to show it was Engine related damage dUE to oil, it could get ugly. So what is your opinion on that?

Factory OCI seems to be about 7500 following the OLM. I typically put so many miles on them so fast..the warranty is out way before an engine problem can arise and not a fan of extended warranties. @67Customs...yep from the thriving metropolis of Franklin,NC smile The primary reason for the thoughts on 5k filter change, like MOST here, just a little OCD when it comes to oil smile It's a disease I tell ya ! I'm running either MC 5w20 or most recently, Pennzoil 5w20 high mileage (on sale) and following the OLM and changing no lower than 5%, and that equates to about 7500...give or take a little. Filter is the same either way....I started out with MC 5w20 and 5k OCI until the last two changes. Thanks to all !

[/quote I understand why you would want to change 5,000 miles on a standard regular drain filter. But if you go to the extended drain type filters you won't have to do that. In fact they start working better past 5,000 miles if they start getting loaded up a little bit and there is no way in heck there going to get loaded up at 10,000 miles intervals. Most of them hold anywhere from 26 to 29 grams of dirt and if your getting that much dirt or engine metal coming from that truck than no filter will save you..LOL!

Geeez ! I Know...If I don't raise my hood and check all vitals at LEAST once a week, I feel like I have abused a loved one smile I need help... a twelve step program or something: "Hi..I'm Thomas, and I have an oil and maintenance problem "

Everyone at work makes fun of me now, I can't stop talking about Oil and Filters, My wife laughs at me, My Dad who is loopy sometimes himself is even thinking I'm crazy. In a week or two I going to stay away from this site or find another hobby. I check my oil almost 4 times a week. All because I did a UOA and my car showed 199 parts per million of Aluminum I haven't been the same since. In addition my brothers 09 Avenger with the 3.5 liter, which is the same as mine, blows through a quart of oil at least every 1000 miles, sometimes I wish I just kept my other car..LMAO!

Just because it says 15k on the bottle doesn't mean you can blindly run it 15k in your car without thinking twice. Same goes for Amsoil and any other extended drain oil. I've seen one too many UOA's of M1 EP completely toast @ 6,000 miles. The OP's case is different though. He has a new truck and puts a lot of miles on it in a very short time frame. This is easy on the truck and easy on the oil, so he's a prime example of Extended OCIs and he should be able to safely do 10k OCIs with a quality oil and oil filter to match (no midway filter change needed). Find something on sale and go for it.

+1....my thoughts exactly.... IMO....These are the two best oils and filters for long OCI's

It's the dark brown varnish stains is what I'd be concerned about. Even light brown varnish stains are atrocious.

He wants to go 10,000 miles, than go with an oil that can exceed that or spend money on a Blackston Lab Test. As for my engine and my long highway mile driving, The 10W30 Mobil EP had a TBN of 4.1 at 11,000 miles. Not to say it will do it on other vehicles.
