supton- I think the answer is neither converting from through-hole, nor putting in brighter LEDs (correct me if I'm wrong here, Mud). I think he was converting from incandescent bulbs to LEDs here. As for SMD vs. through-hole, the transition is not so obvious when it comes to vehicle lighting, where a lot of regular (through-hole) LEDs are still used.
