My father-in-law just gave me a call asking me questions about 100K prev. maintenance on his Honda Odyssey. Unfortunately, I'm a GM guy and don't know anything about Honda's. I told him I'd talk to my good friends on BITOG and let him know what I find out.

So, here are a few questions...

His biggest concern right now is the timing belt. He's called a couple stealerships and they were quoting him about $700. This included timing belt, serp. belt, and water pump replacement. I've never replaced a timing belt on any car, but I've never heard of a water pumped being replaced if it's not broke. With that being said, I'm guessing that $700 to replace a timing belt is a little high. Does anybody have an estimate as to how much that job should cost?

Besides the timing belt change, is there any other BIG job that would need to be done at 100K. What I'm thinking of is just the typical tune-up stuff: plugs, wires, oil & filter change, trans. service, air filter, fuel filter, tire rotation, etc. Am I missing anything?

OK, that's pretty much it. The main question is about the timing belt but I'd really appreciate general feedback as to what he needs to look into for his 100K service.

Thanks in advance!

I've replaced a few timing belts and found it usually work intensive. Many will replace the water pump while "they're in there" and I recommend it. I think I would check out some well known and trusted independent mechanic and get the same work for a much better price.

Someone with a manual for that car and year probably be really helpful on this one.

I'm kind of surprised Honda had a belt, but I notice it is an '00 model.

I think with the 00 ody at 100k you are looking at timing belt, water pump and plugs. Everything else is just get inspected. Go to a good honda specific independent and the should be able to do the water pump and timing belt for about 500-600 bucks.

On honda's if the timing belt goes, you can kiss the valves and possibly the engines goodbye as it is an interference engine.

Which it is. All 6-cyl Hondas have a belt, IIRC.

If they really did quote him $700 for replacing all those items, I'd jump on it ASAP. That's a great price. Most people on AcuraZine are paying $800 or more at the dealership.

It isn't an easy job. It can easily take >6 hrs. Have you ever looked at an engine compartment of a Honda? There's very little room to work; its a very unpleasant job.

But as for general maint. at 100K, I'd look into the following:
1) Oil/Filter change
2) Spark Plugs
3) Air Filter
4) Cabin Air Filter (if equipped, don't remember)
5) Transmission Fluid, use Honda ATF Z-1 only or equivalent. (Good luck to him, hope he has had his transmission replaced, rarely do the original units last past 100K)
6) Tire Rotation
7) Valve Clearance Adjustment (Some Hondas require valve clearance adjustment, can't remember if this one is one of them.)

Hope this helps, Michael

Michael,

You forgot the PCV valve.

The Honda dealer is a bit pricey, but atleast you will get the job done correctly (most of the time)

Hey Guys, thanks for all the great info. I knew those Honda transmissions had some issues so hopefully he's had it serviced regularly.

I didn't realize there were independent Honda mechanics out there. I'll definitely have him look into that. I personally hate going to any dealership for any kind of maintenance.

Anyway, thanks again for all the info!

~$700 for all that sounds typical. That's a lot of work. A tight fit & the old waterpump gaskets are always a joy to scrape off an aluminum block. Dealerships in my area are charging ~$600 for a single axle brake job alone these days!

At 100K you should also change:
transmission oil, brake fluid, hydraulic fluid, coolant, etc..
