It doens't matter which bypass filter you use, the oil will turn black. Like I said before soot is submicronic and really cannot be filtered out of the oil.

Speaking of how small particles that can be filtered the Amsoil filter say's 1/10 of a micron as well. Exactly how effecient is the question. It seems ralph say's the same thing over and over again, 40 years he's been using this and that, and that oil has no bering on the wear and performance of an engine yada yada.... But I never see any analysis program, no particle counts and so forth.

Another thing is that only about 10% of the oil is flowing through the by-pass filter at any one time ( I would guess even less with the TP becuase of small surface area of the filter) So there is still going to be soot in the oil no matter what (there will be soot anyhow because the TP is only effecient down to 1-2 microns. I would venture to guess it's not 95% at 1 micron for any lenth of time, as it would loose effeciency after a few thousand miles,(hence the reason for frequent filter changes) which I guess is reason it's much cheaper to just change the TP and top off then get a used oil analysis.

I don't think it's only soot you have to worry about but the total package. I would get with Terry Dyson to develop a total program to reduce wear, extend drains and save money.

Actually, if you crack the Tee on the Motor Guard and let it drain you only need to add 1/2 quart.

Priceless indeed.
 
Correct Slider, I didn't want the stats to look too good. Same with wasting a extra minute for the change, it takes me extra when I am wearing my job interview suit and I am extra careful not to spill. I only use about a 1/2 quart also.

A TP filter can get virtually all of the soot. Thats enough to keep the oil very clear in my Toyota Camry. Not enough to keep the oil from getting black in a diesel engine. I got back the results from an 8.3 Cummins in a large motor home after a trip to Alaska and back from Texas. The Delo 400 15- 40 was very black but was 2/10th of one percent. Another 8.3 Cummins in a yard tractor with 320 hrs with a darkish tint and a much larger and more effective bypass filter shows under 1/10th of one percent. For maximum engine life the soot content should stay one percent or less. I hope to change the big filter at 1,000 hrs. I will send a sample at about 600 hrs and 1,000 hrs. Using Motor Guards formula of 1 HR = 30 miles that should be good enough. It would be a waste of my time and money to pay for an oil analysis on my 600 dollar Camry with 185,000 miles on it.
The big 750 HP diesel rated filter is a better soot grapper not because it has a better element than the Motor Guard but because it is huge and filters at the same rate and is also submicronic. The element is 7 1/2" wide and 15 1/2" long. It takes about 4 gallons of make up oil when it is changed. Normally you see these big filters on large trucks. If I drove a lot of miles I would bolt one to the frame on my Ford diesel. Instead I just use one Motor Guard and change it more often. I don't need a drain pan to change the Motor Guard. My old Ford 6.9 needs the filter changed about every 2,000 miles to stay ahead of the soot. Some Powerstroke owners are going 3 or 4,000 miles.
All it amounts to is proper filtration and adding enough new oil. I don't drain oil. I had a Mazda diesel that needed the 750 HP filter bolted to the frame.
