0w30's... M1, Amsoil, GC

I'm almost finished with the rinse phase in my turbo 1.8 liter Mazda.... and I'd like to try a good 0w30 in it.

I've read various things on here... Mobil 1 seems to be a good oil at a good price. Amsoil S2K is a great oil, but overpriced and has a thickening problem. Lastly, I have yet to read anything negative about German Castrol, other than it being hard to get ahold of.

Can anyone give me any suggestions here? Is a 0w30 oil sufficient for a turbo application? Which brand would be my best bet?

All insight appreciated

I would go with the GC 0w-30. Its a bit thicker than the Mobil1, and, if it is relabeled Castrol SLX, as many people think it is, it is probably the most shear stable 0w-30 available.

A UOA from your engine will tell the whole story, but this is a good starting point.

What do you mean by a thickening problem. I'm not an Amsoil user but I would sure like to hear this one.

true, I use Amsoil 0w in a few engines and 10W in a few engines and after 5000 to 14,000 miles (2 of my recent OCIs) it has crept into the low 40W arena. However, the wear numbers are not affected by this viscosity creep. You are probably going to be doing shorter OCIs anyway. Amsoil and GC are in the higher end of the 30w range whereas Mobil 1 is in the lower end.

GC and Mobil 1 will be about $2-$3 per quart less expensive to purchase then Amsoil and certainly easier to obtain if that is a concern.

In my turbo I use the 10W but I would prefer the GC or Amsoil if I were going to a 0W in my turbo

the only amsoil sample that i have had go out of grade had 25,000 miles of use. most of my samples have 12,000 to 15,000 miles and they have all stayed in grade.

I was in Autozone today looking for GC, but the only bottle of 0w30 was made in the USA. Is it different then GC?

That depends on if it's the new US made stuff or the old US made stuff.

The key is to look for the following specs:

ACEA A3/B3,B4
VW 502.00,505.00,503.01
BMW LL-01
MB 229.1,MB 229.3
Porsche approved

If it's got these specs on it, it's the right stuff.

Sorry if I missed this, but are you saying some of the newer USA made 0-30 is the exact same as GC? I am wanting to put this in my TITAN and was holding off becuase GC is hard to find.

Some of the members here have spotted new Syntec 0w30 which is made in the US and is green in color and lists the same specs as GC, so supposedly it's the same. We need to get someone who has found this stuff to do a voa to be sure though. But it does look promising.

Most likely yes, I will be using German Castrol 0w-30 in my STi once I switch over from conventional dino oil. As others have mentioned, a UOA will tell you the true story.

Yesterday I was in one of the 2 local Autozones that have had GC in the past. All the latest stock of 0W-30 Syntec was the old group III A1 rated made in USA stuff. I asked, and one of the guys said they'd just gotten it in the last couple of weeks.

I wish someone would could find out what's really going to happen with this oil. I have another vehicle I'd like to use it in...
