I picked up an old 2002 Silverado 1500 with the 5.3 in it today for a couple grand. Just an extra vehicle to have around the house to do some yard work, garbage runs etc. it’s got 261k kilometres on it, unknown maintenance history besides a recent tune up. The oil looked terrible when I drained it out, I have a bunch of 0w30 euro oil in the garage and threw that in, any negatives to running this oil going forward?

I've never seen Pennzoil Platinum Euro here in S.E. Michigan. I'll keep an eye out for the label when oil shopping.

Sounds like a nice brew for the aged Silverado.
Yea they sell it here at Canadian tire. Plus shell makes the Canadian tire version of it as well, so I’ve been stocking up on it when on sale and just using it in all the vehicles now. We have a 2019 wrangler 3.6 and my 2018 Durango R/T with the 5.7 hemi. So I’m glad to just throw that in the Chevy now as well.

Wait.... I've seen that 0w30 in stores. I was expecting yours to be (non-LX) 5w30. I was expecting the label to read Pennzoil Platinum Euro (0w20 or 5w30).
Sorry for the confusion.

All the Walmarts in my area have stopped carrying their 5w30 Euro-L, you can order it online and have it shipped but nowhere to be found on the shelves. I guess they had to make room for all that R&P oil.

I'd bet the Waltons have huge investments with various Saudi Arabia businesses. Could explain why Valvoline shelf space has increased.

Significantly so, I didn't take a picture the last time I was in there but it was loaded with Extended Protection and R&P, even Castrol doesn't even have that much anymore. Typically the most shelf space is reserved for M1.

as I remember, that oil has a super high VI (like 212 or something).

That means it’s a thin base oil and it’s using lots of VM/VII to achieve ~ 3.5 HTHS rating.

That’s good and bad. Good because it’ll help economy. Bad because all the VM will shear down in short order. I had considered using it back when I had my WRX, but decided against due to this and the increased possibility of IVD.

Using Pennzoil Plat Euro LX 0W-30 in my out of warranty 1.8L 2ZR-FE. She loves it. Great UOA here just ignore the 4L lube added. I messed up their form thought that field was for the new lube amount added at change lol

I only run it for 6months at a time. Also admittedly low mileage. But overall pleased with this oil and results to have bought quite a few more jugs of it. I don't know much about the Silverado, but I have my doubts it'd cause any problems. Your call, but on a 2002 I'd risk it personally.

Mechanical shear of the VM is highly dependent on the engine. Have you verified that your engine will cause shear “in short order”? I haven’t seen any here that do. The oil also carries more than one approval that has a stay-in-grade requirement.

What is the VI of the oil? And how much is due to superior base stocks with naturally a high VI?

That Penn Plat Euro LX oil has VI of 190, Mobil 1 ESP 5w-30 has VI 187.
That Penn Euro LX oil is my go-to oil for a while now but I don't run long OCIs.

I’ve read that boxer engines have a rep for shearing. I don’t think many are questioning that.

Perhaps I should have qualified the statement about shearing down in short order with “compared with something like M1 ESP that has less VM”.

I’m going off memory here, but I think I remember it having a VI of over 200. And I remember it being one of those oils that a lot of folks talked about around here briefly, back around 2016, but it seems like the general consensus was that it was one of those oils that had around 3.5 HTHS but used a pretty thin base oil with a lot of VM to get there.

Pennzoil LX will be cheaper when bought on sale @ C$41.99 when you count $10 Pennzoil online MIR.
Both oils are the same, both are made in Germany unlike QS Euro LX.
