I have a 2018 BMW X1 (wifes) that the warranty finished last October.
It's had a steady diet of 0w20 BMW LL 14/17 since new. The last oil change
last October, I used ROWE 0w20 BMW LL 17. Going forward, I like to move
up a grade to either 0W30 or 5W30. I'm thinking Pennzoil. The 5w30 has the
BMW LL 04 approval. The 0W30 has no BMW approval. What would my Euro
experts use?

Sorry, I forgot. We only put about 12000 km or 7500 miles per year.
I like to change the oil around 7 - 8000 km or 4500/5000 miles.

I would choose a 30W with a BMW approval...basically a VW504 oil.

@2KBMW Pennzoil Euro LX 0W-30 is also a VW504 oil, and will most likely work great. It has no BMW approvals: https://www.shell-livedocs.com/data/published/en-US/167988aa-905e-4084-a156-cff4045be0af.pdf

That being said, for your application and OCI, any "stout" oil will work. Something like Mobil 1 FS 0W-40 will also work great. It's a full-SAPS oil, no BMW approvals.

Otherwise, go for Pennzoil Euro L 5W-30. It's more important to keep up with your maintenance than the oil brand you use. They're all great lubricants and a lot of work went into engineering and testing them.

This is it. Close the thread and call it a day.

Pennzoil euro L is cheap at walmart.com ($52 for 10qt) and has a rebate 20$ on 10qts. =$32 for 10qt
also has bmw LL-04.

That is what I would use if I wanted a 5w30.

I can get either Pennzoil Euro 5w30 or 0w30 for $39.99 Cdn for a 5 L jug. This is our sale price.
I can go to the US. I live at a boarder city a few miles from the US. It's the exchange rate that kills us.

I would use M1 ESP 5w-30 or (no LL04 but Porsche C30) or if you prefer full SAPS the new Castrol Edge 0W-30 A3/B4 LL01. The Pennzoil recommended is fine too.

If you don't need the cold flow properties of the 0W-30 then get the Euro L 5W-30 and call it a day. It will run just fine.

Keep in mind that how you handle oil (cleanliness), using a decent filter (probably made by MANN/MAHLE), and keeping up with your maintenance is more important than the brand "pedigree" of the oil you use. And Shell makes good products, so there's another good reason to buy Pennzoil Euro L 5W-30.

Stay with BMW approvals in that engine and do not deviate to Mobil1 ESP.
Go Pennzoil Platinum Euro 5W30 L. You can go with Pennzoil Platinum Euro 5W40 too. Canadian tire has it on sale usually. You can go Motomaster that carries LL01 or LL04.

It appears to have approval again. He's out of warranty though, and ESP passes 229.52. I doubt it is inadequate in any way, more likely a political issue.

LL01 and LL04 have specific tests designed for B46/48/58 engines as well as N20/26.

Bought it last week. SP is not here yet.
