What is everyone's thought on these cars. I found one that I am considering buying. http://taylor.nylemaxwell.com/used/detai...4d_Austin_Texas One thing that is nice about it, is the engine and transmission come with a free lifetime protection guarantee for as long as I own the car. Part covered Engine: cylinder block and cylinder head and all internally lubricated parts, turbocharger, supercharger, harmonic balancer, timing gear, chain and belt, timing cover, intake and exhaust manifolds, valve covers, oil pan, and engine mounts. Transmission: transmission case and all internally lubricated parts, torque converter, flywheel / flex plate, vacuum modulator and transmission mounts

From what I've researched, they're probably one of the best years for Pontiacs. It's one of the few GMs that got the Series III 3.8L, which has an aluminum upper intake manifold and the revised metal framed lower intake gaskets, so all the internal coolant leak problems are essentially solved. The drivetrain at least is fairly bulletproof.

The 3800/4T65 combination is durable as anything. It'll also get good highway fuel economy for a car its size.

Thank for the info. How is the asking price for the car I posted in the link? Does is sound reasonable?

$500 over "Excellent" retail in my area. You know that engine requires premium fuel?

You get the engine and tranny warranty, if you only get your car serviced there for every oil change (for the engine warranty) and follow mfg recommendations for the tranny. Watch out as those trannys (4T65-E) can be troublesome, especially in the earlier models. Thats the only weak spot and the engine is pretty much bullet proof with the series III. The GXP with the 3.8 supercharged and the V8 require premium

By 2007 the 4T65 had been fairly well worked out. It wasn't the most advanced transmission then. It was one of the more reliable ones then. The weaker 4T65's were the 98-03 ones with the flake-o-rama pressure control solenoids and the non-hardened 4th gear input shafts. After MY 2003.5, GM put in a redesigned PCS and hardened 4th gear input shaft. Those two revisions made the later 4T65 a very reliable transmission.

Seems pricey to me, but I am not sure what they go for in your neck of the woods. I would think 9500 is fair price for that.

My 2005 suffered from the bad solenoid on the top of the tranny and was not cheap to fix. The tranny then went to to start slipping. They might have been better but I still got a bad one.
