Here is my first UOA post, its a bit hard to get this to look good so bare with me. The truck has 129k on it and I put over 14k on the oil. I did change the filter at 7500 miles. 2qts of make up oil was M1 0w-30AFE and the other was Amsoil. I have been using Amsoil with the same OCI for several years now. The trucks air box has one stripped bolt, no extra silicon though. My climate ranges from 15 to 115 degrees and lots of dust, I drive off road almost every weekend. 34 mile round trip commutes the rest of the time. Now that I'm confident Amsoil works well in my truck I'm going back to M1 or similar at 10k OCI or so due to the price. All comments welcome. The factory report looks so good but I cant get it to load on my computer.

UNITGasoline (Unleaded)FUEL TYPE: OIL USE INTERVAL: 14,145 Miles

COMMENTS: This engine looks great. Universal averages show typical wear after 5,800 miles on the oil. This oil was in use longer, though it seems like you took good care of things during the oil run, adding oil when you needed to and changing the oil filter to keep in-solubles nice and low. And things worked out for you really well. In fact, we think your next oil run can probably be a little longer. No contamination was found and the TBN is good at 2.5. Anything less than 1.0 is considered low for extended use. Try up to 16,000 miles for next time. Nice engine!

You should be able to do similar things with Mobil 1 EP. What oil filters were you using? Was those Amsoil signature series? You should easily be able to run a Fram Ultra 15k without changing it and still get low insolubles, however I think the extra fresh oil was beneficial to your TBN.

Good stuff though.

I started with the Amsoil filter then moved to a Napa Platnium. I get filters for a 99 Silverado because they have more media. I have cut them open. I have some PP and edge ti I got on clearance for the next OCI.

The larger Amsoil should easily be able to handle the full 15k i would think.

I like to up size my filters too! Much more convenient to dump the whole 5.1 quart jug in my Buick and not be too far over the full mark since it recommends 4.5 quarts with a PF7 sized filter but i run the PF52 sized mostly.

I went 12k on a filter before but the oil seamed really flat. Not sure how to describe it but it just felt trashed. Also if I run over 12k the oil presure drops. I think the oil really thickens at that point. My oil in this test was almost a 40 weight even with 50% make up oil! Even though this sample was great I plan to go back to 10k OCI with $5/qt oil from now on.

Here's another Silverado truck engine trying to run on thin oil.

Thin oil don't work on these truck engines -- they need a 40 weight.

It looks like it is doing just fine on it.

Also, when did a modern small block need a 40 weight? I have run anything from a 5w30 to 10w30 from any SBC I have owned that was from the 60's on up to 2000s. No issues, including a 450 hp 383 stroker motor. I've never heard of any of these motors NEEDING 40 or reasons why.

My dad has one year OCI's with the same oil and engine and the truck has almost 200k now. Since the oil thickens up and I have good oil pressure I entertained going to lighter oil. But I think I'll just stick with 5w-30. You won't kill an engine on this stuff.
