Well, I looked around and found many topics that came near, but none that really hit this one on the head. Since nobody around here seems to have an opinion (cough, cough), I figured I would go ahead and ask: the wife's I35 has 96K miles on it now. I've been using Pennzoil Platinum 10W30 with K&N filter for the past 36K (actually started w/Mobil-1 & switched at 80K) but want to know what my options are with the newer oils and stuff on the market now. Am I 'stuck' at 10W30 per the manufacturer's recommendation? We live in coastal South Carolina, drives are typically 150 miles one way, 90% interstate and 100 yards over a gravel access road between the pavement and my property line (which I can't change - we live behind a US Forest Service campground). Winters here are mild if at all, typical summers are usually bitchin' hot & humid. Is another weight do-able? Would I be better off with a dyno or blend as it crests 100K? 10K interval with full synth, now - original recommendation was 3750 interval...

For sure off-topic in this forum, but - how 'bout my air filter? I'm using PureOne now.

Ya'll don't flog me for being a nube - I'm just trying to figure out what my options are and realistic expectations should be.

leave it as is. if you want to save a couple bucks, ditch the K&N oil filter for a pureone.

i have heard great things about the pureone air filter as well.

For your Infiniti, 10w30 is really the best bet. It's a perfect match to the engine. If you are not burning and/or leaking any oil, then stick with what you're running. If money is not a factor, there is no reason to stop using synthetic just because you reached 100K miles.

As for the filters... I have a bias towards WIX for oil and air. I just like them and have had very good luck with them. I've read many good things about K&N but i've never used one, so I can't comment other than what i've read.

If you dont mind spending the money you could spring for a used oil analysis (UOA) after your next oil change to see where you stand wear-wise in your engine. Personally i'd feel better using a semi-synthetic or even a dino and change it more often, but like i said, if what you are doing is working and the UOA shows good wear levels, then keep it up.

My ex-significant other had a 1994 Infiniti J30t and changed the oil every 3K, used pennzoil 10w30 dino and air and oil filters from the local quick-lube place, and when it was sold with 170K on it, it burned no oil and ran perfect.

I miss that car...

homind, that reminds me...I missed my EX the other day. So, I backed up and tried again! Ha!

To the rat on the ledge,

I would advise using a 5-30 or 0-30 to most anyone...well, anyone but someone like you! Pennzoil Platinum IS one of the better new oils, at least according to Terry Dyson. Your 100 mile trips in mild temperatures are as easy on oil as any. Startup wear is generally the biggest enemy to an engine, but, your driving habits aren't full of cold starts, and a 10-30 should hold it's grade better than most 5- or 0-30's....unless you are talking about some synthetics. Second the PureOne oil filter recommendation. K&N is certainly more expensive, isn't it? But, I doubt it is better than a PureOne.
