'02 Ford Ranger 2.3L thermostat $150!!! Help?

It's like they let rube goldburg loose in the engineering dept!
Might as well permanently attach the sparkplugs to the coils and wireing harness and make it only replaceable as a whole unit every 60k.

Not to sounds too bitter, but if this thread was about a $45 BMW thermostat, it would be half-full of snide remarks about bad engineering and pretentious owners.

Despite the fact that just about every other car company has also tried to make a simple part way too complex.

But so what, all brands get bashed and praised on here. It's going to happen on an automotive site that isn't about a specific brand. There are plenty of active BMW fans and owners on here to offset those who don't like them for whatever reason. Same for Ford, GM, MB, Toyota, etc.

As far as the t-stats in the 2.3 and 4.0 go, lets just say I'm really happy to own a 3.slow. It might be an unrefined pushrod V6, but $150 would buy a lot of t-stats for it.

I can understand a thermostat being that expensive when it is computer controlled for dual heat ratings [cruising and power], but it is ludicrous to not use an $8 part otherwise.

How much do they charge for one of those fancy thermostat's in the sealed plastic housing with five hose nipples and the electrical connector? Please include the price of the seven blue bolts that "must" be replaced along with the thermostat.

Yeah, it's still cheaper than the Ford if you don't have to pay for labor.

Mazda sells the engine coolant temp sensor separately. The part number for it is L35G-18-840. You might be better off just buying the $150 thermostat.

Whose idea was it to make engine plumbing out of plastic? Never mind, I know who. The culmination of a century's continuous development of the ICE destroyed by the bean counters. Engines in today's econo-boxes make high performance engines of 25 yrs ago look dowdy. But at the cost of reliability and maintenance. Rant off. Could be just a cheapo gauge set up. The stock gauges in most newer cars are buffered so as not to flicker. The gauges in my Ranger read a low temp,. What is the MPG? Have a warmed up engine temp test done with a scan guage. Just to see what is really happening. Also, knowing what the code exactly pertains to would be good.
