Sample 1: Mobil 1 SuperSyn 10w-30, K&N oil filter, K&N air filter, in vehicle 36000-42283 miles (6200 miles). Run mostly across the desert in July from Reno, to San Diego and back to Nashville.

Sample 2: Mobil Delvac 1 5w-40, Motorcraft FL1a oil filter, K&N air filter, in vehicle 42283-52316 miles (9961 miles). Run mostly in TN, mostly on the highway.

My copper and bearing wear is less than many people over these intervals. Currently in the crankcase is Delvac 1 w/ about 6000 miles a Motorcraft FL1a filter. I'm thinking of running it out to 15,000 miles possibly changing the FL1a filter at 7500 miles or even trying a Fleetguard LF3487 filter (syn media).

Delvac is clearly the winner here. Add another 3K miles to the M1 10W-30 and see how much more wear it would have compared to the D1 @ 9K. My TJ's love the Schaeffer 15W-40 they get and their UOA's look good too. Stick with the 5W-40.

Despite the good results with 5w-40, I am considering the use of GC 0w-30. My bearing wear is already low with either the 10w-30 or 5w-40. I agree the 5w-40 does work well. However, in both the VW Jetta TDI and Jeep that I have used Delvac 1, it sounds like a truck compared to oil designed for gasoline engines. I saw HEV's sample of GC 0w-30 and wait for his next results. I am the second owner of this Cherokee. The first owner used Mobil 10w-30 within 300 miles of factory new.

I'm interested in seeing a few more GC UOAs in the 2.5/4.0 engines. If it turns out to be at par ..then great. I never noticed any fuel economy difference with the M1 xw-30 lineup ..so that won't really be an issue. These engines just are never going to be fuel squeezers.

Here are the most recent results. The most recent sample is with Delvac 1 and a Fleetguard LF3487 microglass filter. There is still the same K&N air filter as previous tests and same spark plugs as the second test. Unlike the first two samples which were in for about 8 weeks each, this sample was in for about 8 months. The miles are still the same type of highway, but I sometimes use my pick-up for the trips instead of this Jeep.

Excellent results even with the viscosity in the 50's territory.
TBN is holding strong!!
Did you add any amount of oil?

Here are the most recent results. The most recent sample is with Delvac 1 and a Fleetguard LF3487 microglass filter. I use it as a commuter vehicle and road trips. About 5,500 miles of this was a road trip in May to Northern California. I am using a Wix paper air filter. The Delvac 1 thickend up. But I suppose its not too bad a sample, considering no filter change and no top off oil.

Here are the most recent results. The most recent sample is with GC 0w-30 and one of the new Amsoil EaO15 filters. Previous oil was Delvac 1 and a Fleetguard LF3487 microglass filter. This was the first sample after running Mobil Delvac 1300 15w-40 and Auto-RX over the summer.

Where did the edit function go? Will someone delete all but the last sample information?

Brian,

What type of air filter are you running here? The silicone level looks too high for an 8000 mile run.

I'd be interested in seeing if you could minimize the oil thickening over long OCI's using the Amsoil EAO oil filter.

The GC is good stuff, but I still think the low viscosity, synthetic diesel oils like Delvac 1 and the Amsoil Series 3000/HDD are about the most robust formulations out there for long OCI's under severe service conditions...
