279,000 miles - Mitsubishi Mirage engine teardown - top end vs pistons

As an oil-focused forum, we tend to blame (and credit) oil for many different things when there are usually several other factors in play. It wouldn’t be uncommon for a delivery vehicle to see extended idle times for example, which could cause such piston deposits. A cold running engine due to...

    New flywheel bolts

This is a common misconception…a torque turn spec does NOT necessarily mean a fastener is TTY or permanently stretched when torqued.

Deciding on which weight diesel oil for 2000 7.3L Ford Diesel

You are correct about this. Caterpillar and Navistar collaborated to design the HEUI fuel system. I’ve worked for a Cat dealer for years, and we’ve always recommended 10w-30 for the HEUI engines even back when we used 15w-40 on everything else. You want that high pressure oil pump (which is an...

To all you Xw-20 doubters out there…

Which is exactly my point. Some of us, me included, go against manufacturers specs thinking that 20wt is “too thin” to properly protect an engine. This is evidence (if ANECDOTAL) that this is not the case.

To all you Xw-20 doubters out there…

I work in the heavy diesel segment and the argument there is 10w-30 vs 15w-40. We’ve mainly switched to using 10w-30 exclusively over the years simply because it better suits our northern climate. We’ve used 10w-30 without issue for millions of operating hours, yet there’s always those who...

To all you Xw-20 doubters out there…

I will start by saying I normally run 5w-30 in my Sierra which calls for 0w-20. Not looking to start yet another thick vs thin argument. But had to share this. I came across this group on FB:https://www.facebook.com/groups/938184509942736/?ref=share&mibextid=S66gvF One post was about an almost...

best vehicle model to run on waste motor oil aka black diesel

I would think VW diesels would be prevalent in Central America. They were prechamber prior to 1997. I used to run my 1.9 IDI Jetta on WMO, although I did have issues with the injector heat shields plugging with carbon. However, I didn’t get very scientific with filtering and additives—it is...

other uses for brake cleaner and ISO heet?

Brake clean has a ton of uses. I’ve used it as wasp/insect killer, weed killer, and fabric stain remover when nothing else will touch it. The flammable stuff can be used as starting fluid.

High oil pressure in 2.5L TJ jeep

I don’t trust electric gauges at all until they’ve been verified against a known accurate mechanical gauge. Put a gauge on there and check before worrying about possible causes of high pressure.

    Dirty oil causing hard starts?

The only engines I could see where this could apply are those diesels that use engine oil as part of the fuel system, for example the Ford power stroke, some Cat engines, or stationary engines with a hydraulic governor. Poor oil quality can cause a variety of symptoms on those.

ACDELCO iridium spark plugs after 100k in Chevy Volt

Why heavy pulling and high EGTs won't burn the soot out of your DPF

Interesting. Makes sense if you think about it…boost created by the turbo is not “free” energy, instead it is a reflection of the heat absorbed by the turbo. For those saying 1200F is too hot, that’s actually about right for pre-turbo temps under full load. Part of my work involves load...

As others have said, check your alternator. I had a GMC Savana work van do this for ages. Then one night a failed alternator left me stranded. Never made the noise again after replacing alternator.
