Oem specified manual transmission oil superseded - Renault Elf NFJ 75W-80

Obscenely expensive here… Assume it’s just fuel efficiency they’re chasing with thinner oils?

Oem specified manual transmission oil superseded - Renault Elf NFJ 75W-80

Thread grave dig - here in Australia readily available gear oils are a bit sparse for a Renault ELF spec… This is listed as the required 75w80, but is pretty thick at 10.6 cst at 100 degrees. https://penriteoil.com.au/products/trans-gear-75w-80-semi-syn What would the effects be of a thicker oil?

Texas bill that introduces $200 fee on EVs to fund roads just passed

America ( and to a lesser but still significant extent here in Australia) has gone down the road of car dependency urban design and massive road infrastructure “needs” entirely at the behest of oil and auto corporations. It’s now so embedded into society that people think having to use a car to...

Would you change your oil every 200kms?

But you’re going to get bugger all moisture in it in what’s a glorified parked up situation.

Would you change your oil every 200kms?

400kms a year - I’d change it every two years, even if it lives outside in a cold climate with a lot of starts. A bit shameful they’re happy to take her money…

Texas bill that introduces $200 fee on EVs to fund roads just passed

This whole idea is regressive and short sighted. For a start, roads are not jsut funded by fuel taxes - income taxes are jn there too and an EV doesn’t excuse you from those! The fuel taxes can also be argued to cover the other negative consequences of using ICE beyond road wear and tear - such...

Texas bill that introduces $200 fee on EVs to fund roads just passed

Christ, I see this crap is in America as well. This nonsense has been debunked so many times it’s just boring now…

Would you change your oil every 200kms?

Total overkill obviously, but many defending taking the owners money because “that’s what the manual says”. Amusing.

It was actually NSU’s slogan, Audi just pinched it.

    Metal in the trans fluid

Oh right. Yes, I expect the lockup clutch is now heavily worn. So there is a high chance it wont last long. But, a lockup clutch doesn't really wear that much, so if its "ok" now it may yet go for some time. Time will tell! The ECU will quickly note any discrepancies between crank speed and...

A note of optimism :) Nice!

    Metal in the trans fluid

It was only locked because I reused a faulty control solenoid, it’s working perfectly now with a new one installed. Drives really really well! The amount of sheen is such when the fluid is draining it looks perfect, it’s only when I get a couple of litres in the pan and get the light on the...

    Metal in the trans fluid

It’s not that much material, I’m not worried about the filter being plugged. Besides, the size of the particles that gives the fluid a sheen are not caught by the filter anyway - trans filters are not like an engine oil filter, they’re jsut a glorified strainer.

    Metal in the trans fluid

Cheers. If only I’d joined the dots sooner on why it was stumbling in drive. Sigh :( Yeah there is a conventional valve body with sliding pistons. There is a fine filter in the valve body and another little magnet, there is a big magnet on the filter housing and two more on the front cover...

    Metal in the trans fluid

It doesn’t have an external cooler, it has a heat exchanger on the trans. It was clean. No, I was super OCD and it was a spotlessly clean build. I just did horrible horrible things to the converter clutch - and I’m assuming it was the converter clutch slipping, I can’t imagine it would grip and...

    Metal in the trans fluid

Anyway. Drive it until it drops. Little point in pulling it out and apart now while it’s driving perfectly. Bloody annoying and disappointing, but they’re a very cheap and easy trans to rebuild at least. Just will involve a fair bit of work I’d rather not do over!

    Metal in the trans fluid

I would have thought so too. But it still works, so I guess there is still friction material.

    Metal in the trans fluid

No shavings and no chunks I should add - just particles from the lockup clutch being horribly abused.

    Metal in the trans fluid

Well… The metal will be from the steel side of the lockup clutch in the converter. And if it’s locking up nicely still it may yet go for a while as that doesn’t really wear as such in normal use. So yeah, it’s a matter of whether the contamination in the fluid screws up the rest of it.
