How should I select a new helmet?

Go to a store that sells motorcycle helmets. Try a bunch on. Find your size and fit. If it's a local store that you want to support, buy a helmet from them. I'm a fan of hi-viz and bright colored helmets too. If your local shop is a big chain that doesn't care about you, go ahead and order...

    Rotella T5 and T6 in 10w30

Sorry/Not sorry for bumping my old thread... Has anyone tried the T6 10w30? My local Walmart sells both the T5 and T6 in 10w30 for the same price. I know the T5 10w30 works in my CB1100, and T4 15w40 works well in my Shadow VT750s, but I had a bad experience when I tried the T6 15w40 in one...

    2009 Honda Shadow 750 Out: ST6607, Rotella T4 15w40 In: ST6607, Rotella T4 15w40 2014 Honda CB1100 Out: MP6607, Rotella T5 10w30 In: Yamaha/Denso 5gh-13440-61, Rotella T5 10w30. Last year I scored a bunch of MP6607 filters on clearance. These have the silicon ADBV, so well-suited to the air...

    Rotella T6 Alternatives?

Probably good enough. If you have some lying around, try it. Why not try the 15w40? Are you starting in the severe cold on a regular basis? If so you might consider the T5 10w30.

    2021 BMW F750 GS - Good Oil?

I'm not clear what you did here. Wasn't the Castrol Power1 4T you had a 5w40? So you dumped the Castrol, but you got more Castrol? Or did you get the Power 1 4T in 10w40? So you tried the Rotella and you're dumping it now? I'm confused...

    2021 BMW F750 GS - Good Oil?

If that Castrol is working for you, keep using it. The comparable BMW oil that BMW recommends is ridiculously expensive... I'm not familiar with Bavaria being an oil producing region. They're most likely buying it from someone else and slapping their premium label (and price) on it. I...

Post Your Latest (Motorcycle) Oil Change!

I hope the foaming is just a fluke. I scored a dozen quarts of that Castrol "Power 1" full synthetic for $4 a quart on Craigslist. That's cheaper than what I pay for Rotella T5 10w30. I was thinking I could mix it 50-50 with the Rotella for my 2014 CB1100. I'm on my second year with the T5...

    Engine Types and Oil Specs

Just like @Pete in PA and you did above! To use your analogy, one could talk about chocolate referring to things like percentage of cocoa, amount of sugar, amount of milk and or dairy ingredients, lecithin, carrageen, etc. But you'd need to be a true chocolate geek to care about that stuff! 🤓

Mobil, Amsoil, Redline, Rotella, Castrol... Seems like we're back to talking about brand names. Sorry about that.

    Engine Types and Oil Specs

Thanks for the thoughtful reply. The GN4 I ran was 10w40. That's what turned into watery burnt coffee. Honda recommends the 10w30 for this engine. I have been running Rotella T5 10w30 for the past two years. Approximately 4k miles per year, and the T5 comes out still viscous and while...

    Engine Types and Oil Specs

I have no doubt that Honda knows what their engines require. It's their legal obligation to maximize shareholder value that assures me that there are better ways to choose oil than brand name alone.

    Engine Types and Oil Specs

I liked the Castrol Actevo 10w40 in my liquid cooled Aero 750. I'd buy it again if I couldn't get the Rotella 15w40. Yes. The engine was warm, but it's the same way I've always dumped old oil before an oil change. When I dumped the used GN4, it was totally black, no opacity at all. It seemed...

    Engine Types and Oil Specs

I'm not buying that. The Honda manual recommends Good 'Nuff 4 Honda oil because it creates an extra revenue stream for them. Honda owner's manuals recommend Honda GN4 10w30 for all their engines. 10w40 for hot climates. Being a Japanese company, they're fully onboard with the JASO MA...

    Engine Types and Oil Specs

Apologies in advance if this seems to be a naive question. I'm not an engineer, just a guy who likes to ride and occasionally wrench... I'm curious as to what kinds of oil specifications go best with different types of engines, particularly with regard to motorcycle engines. The starting...

2024 Current Formula Shell Rotella T4 15W-40 still ok to use?

I'm using the 2024 T4 15w40 in both of my two Honda VT750's. I changed the oil the beginning of June, so a little over a thousand miles on the oil in each bike. No problems here. Edit... The T6 no longer carries the JASO MA letters on the jug, but has a picture of a motorcycle instead. The T4...

    Bypass Filter Standards?

Huh? I like peanut butter. Can you swim? I don't follow your reply. My question is, how come different oil filters don't include the bypass pressures as part of the product description? They'll happily tell you about the ADBV material, and often the filter media too. Why the silence...

    Bypass Filter Standards?

If a Honda motorcycle prefers an oil filter with a 12 psi bypass valve, wouldn't it make sense to say that in the manufacturer's owners manual? Usually they simply say, "We recommend Honda brand oil filters..." Here on BITOG, I doubt the majority of Honda owners are actually using Honda...

    Bypass Filter Standards?

I'm kind of a novice at this stuff, but I am trying to wrap my brain around it. I understand that racing applications generally call for a higher bypass pressure, to insure that motor oil still gets filtered, even when running high revs and operating in higher pressure ranges. Also, racing...
