Should oil brand matter so long as specs are met?

I used to be a “minimum spec” person years ago, but not anymore. All oils are not the same. Yes, they’ll meet the floor of the API requirements, but if you put me in an experiment where I needed to keep a vehicle for 300k miles and I could either choose to run Mobil ESP or Lucas for its entire...

Mobil 1 Advanced Clean formulation change

Exactly. If ExxonMobil needs to change then the companies that are merely blenders are going to really be subject to whatever these industry headwinds throw at them over the foreseeable future.

Pennzoil Platinum vs Valvoline Advanced vs Castrol Edge vs Quaker State

Like others have said, it’s splitting hairs. Pick the price or branding you like best.

Gas has gone up 30+%, why hasn’t automotive Oil?

Personally, it doesn’t bother me much if the price of a jug goes up a few bucks, but in terms of gasoline, Americans drive a lot over the course of a year and while our fuel is cheaper than many other places, we make up for it on volume.

2008 Accord V6. 200k miles on unit. OCI: 6,576 miles. Out and in: Mobil 1 Extended Performance High Mileage 5W-30 and Mobil 1 filter. Fourth change in a row with this oil.

Gas has gone up 30+%, why hasn’t automotive Oil?

Mystik and SuperGard are about to leapfrog their way up the 2026 oil change tally list.

Gas has gone up 30+%, why hasn’t automotive Oil?

Not saying by choice, but rather if the group III shortage is that severe then perhaps blenders will be forced to produce synthetic blends to maintain adequate volume. I’m not saying people will prefer to choose a blend, I’m saying there might not be enough group III to go around for a certain...

It’s $27.97 at my Walmart as of a few days ago.

Gas has gone up 30+%, why hasn’t automotive Oil?

I wonder if some of us will be going back to blends temporarily later this year…

2023 F350 7.3 - oil change two quarts shy, what would you do?

I would have waited too. I’ve become a fan of not mixing oils/add packs.

Shell Helix Ultra and the hypocrisy of marketing

Mobil hasn’t been partner with McLaren F1 since 2016. For the past several years Mobil has had a partnership with Red Bull instead.

I’ve never understood the appeal of these parts store bundles when Walmart exists.

New Video: RESULTS: What Valvoline Restore and Protect does to engines after 500K+ miles

Not to mention the amount of varnish. It’s odd to me that they’re almost throwing their other products under the bus to pave the way for Valvoline Restore and Protect advertising.

New Video: RESULTS: What Valvoline Restore and Protect does to engines after 500K+ miles

They cite around the 11 minute mark that there was a stuck compression ring on piston number 2 that Valvoline Restore and Protect freed up. “We essentially put the engine back together without freeing up that ring and we let the oil do the work”. How can you reassemble an engine without...

Additive fallout put back in solution

I don’t see how that settling wouldn’t affect the performance of the oil, even to a small extent. If some of the add pack doesn’t make it to your engine, then you aren’t running the formula as intended, no? For what it’s worth, I’ve experienced this too. A few years ago I was on a string of...

    Moog parts

Off-road trucks have an enthusiast base just like anything else. Tons of car owners don’t have a need to run boutique oils either, but here we are discussing the different types of VII and such. It’s the same thing.

    Moog parts

I’ve never been anything but impressed with MOOG parts, but maybe I’ve just gotten lucky. I like that their sway bar links (at least the ones I’ve used) have zerk fittings where the stock components do not.

BG EPR to ease lifter tick on Miata

It’s not a constant tick to dampen with these engines, it’s a very loud tick that comes and goes. It’s a very common occurrence with these particular engines.

Flooring a car with 0-20w oil after a few minutes

I don’t see how blowing a head gasket is possible the way you’re describing it. The head bolts are torqued while the engine is cold anyway.

Flooring a car with 0-20w oil after a few minutes

I’m not saying I recommend it, because I don’t, but OEMs test engines by cold starting them on engine dynos and then immediately revving them well beyond what most people typically do on their own. I don’t buy that it’s as awful as people think. Yes the parts are still expanding, but the oil is...
