there are all kinds of tests and experiments you can find mixing diff, oils synthetic and dino, using lighter or heavier oil flow test and testing wear and they all wind up testing very close to the same. i worked in the lube indus. and there are only a very few manufactures of lubes the rest...

you,re right tran,s at least used to have hot and cold marks,,, but they hold at least twice as much if not more than a oil pan so i was kinda amazed at how much 5 qt,s can expand and i don,t recall this ever coming up except in the last few yr,s had a chevy colorado and it checked the same hot...

sounds like diff problems oil doesn,t cause loss of power unless you throw a rod,, and you said i believe little smoke at startup thats usually valve seals and a small leak so sounds like you answered your own question on the oil usage don,t know about loss of power
