Wife's 2013 Hyundai seized up today 94k miles

I would like to take a moment to thanks whistle blowers for what they do. My wifes 11 year old Sonata 2.4 with 94k miles seized up today on the highway. Got towed into the shop I used to work at. I was still there when we pulled the belts off and tried to turn the engine by hand. It was seized...

UOA sample medium - can I use my ethanol test tube

I'm just doing my oil change and I would like to get a UOA but once again I neglected to order a sample kit to drain into. I had a briggs and Stratton branded glass test tube for checking ethanol levels (snowblower, 4 lawnmowers and a generator all need to be stored with non ethanol unless I...

    1qt 75w90 1qt 85w140 in front diff 05 Silverado

I just changed my front gear oil in my 254k mile 2005 Silverado last night. The diff is quiet and fluid stays clean looking (I think the last couple changes went 30-50k miles) but it has had leaking axle seals since like 140k miles and there is a significant amount of metal shavings stuck to the...

    Rear axle failed 2005 Silverado

I just hit 250k miles and the last few days my truck started clunking in the rear at low speed over bumps, as the truck sways side to side. Some inspection revealed a lot of play in the axles. Including side to side play in both rear wheels. I have not pulled the diff cover yet, but I was sent...

Construction site dust - effect on OCI and air filter interval

I've been overthinking this way too much lately (because that's what I do), as I've been trying to make time for my oil change but house repair projects have been getting in the way. I forgot to do a sticker last time, so I'm guessing but I think it's around 6k miles now. Still at 19.6% oil...

Payload and overloading of half ton trucks for work

I've been curious for a while how much weight I'm carrying in my 2005 Silverado 1500 extended cab 4x4. Yesterday I had to pick up a 396lb order of rebar at the local scrap metal facility. I pulled my truck, loaded with surveying gear (minus all my wood stakes and a couple things I removed to...

    RIP 44 years old snowblower

I think todays blizzard was the end for my 1979 MTD Snowflite. Snow started piling up in front of it and I realized the auger wasn't turning. Impeller turns and it drives fine. It will turn if I rotate the auger back and start it...until it hits any snow then it gets stuck. Then I tried to get...

Water pump job mishap - broken heater hose

Halfway done my 2005 Silverado water pump job and the one hose was just a little too tight. Had to go to 2 places to find one in stock. Guess it's better it's replaced now anyway, the plastic was obviously brittle. $69 Canadian for the new hose and t fitting. Hopefully everything else goes...

What brand of water pump for 2005 gm 4.8?

I just replaced both my idler pulleys (both were getting noisy) and with the belt off I discovered that the water pump is noisy as heck as well and has a ton of play in the shaft. So I'm water pump shopping. The original lasted 260,000kms and this one has lasted 120,000 (about 75k miles)...

    Fram ultra XG9688 no gasket?

Finally getting around to doing an oil change on my wife's 2013 Hyundai Sonata....got some m1 0w30 AFE and a Fram ultra xg9688.... pulled it out of the package and it has no o ring on it? Not in the box either. It also looks like some drips of moisture in the bottom (see pic). It looks like...

High oil pressure - failed sending unit?

Driving this morning I assumed I lost next gauge on my defective instrument cluster (2005 Silverado - normal problem). The tach and fuel and oil pressure were the last remaining functioning gauges. I looked over to verify normal oil pressure on torque pro and it read over 80 psi.

Obd2 scan data compared to others GM truck LS engine

I did a log and uploaded to pidfusion.net to compare to other similar trucks. I'm hoping that someone that works on these regularly (like Clinebarger, etc) can comment on anything they see that's out of line. Unfortunately I can see comparing to the baseline (60mph cruise) everyone else was in...

Post the inside of your tailpipe....

Curious what others see inside their tailpipes. Seems an odd thing to think about yes, but I'm baffled by how clean it stays inside my 2005 Silverado 4.8 engine with 240k miles, 10,187 hours, original engine, exhaust o2 sensors, cats etc Comparison pics are my wife's direct injection 2013...

    10,000 engine hours

Finally turned over 10,000 hours on my 05 Silverado. 228k miles and a ton of idling for AC and heat. It's been used as a land surveying truck since around 100k miles (before that it was the owners personal truck). It's been the best truck the company has owned, very infrequent repairs. The usual...

Valve cover gasket replacement on my sister's 2005 Camry - pictures

We got this car about a year with around 170k miles on it to replace her 2010 Taurus (when the water pump financially totalled the car). Finally got around to replacing the valve cover gasket as it smelled badly of oil. The job went pretty well other than a p0352 the next day along with a...

1981 MTD Lawnfllite maintenance - disgusting oil in transaxle

Not sure if the YouTube links will work properly, but I thought some people might be interested this ridiculously bad fluid I drained out, ran for 10 minutes and drained again. Looked like it had a lot of water in it.

Upgraded my broken 2005 snowblower to an 80s model - what do you think?

The 2005 was a hand me down from the father in law. Not well cared for, original belts ready to break, cable kinked and was very frustrating to try and replace, and a foreign object jammed in and broke a shear pin. I'll fix it in the spring to have a backup. $350 for this 80s MTD 8/24 was the...

How much salt is usually on your vehicle in the winter?

And how often do you wash it and at what temperatures? This is a week since the last wash when it went above freezing. I don't wash it below freezing.

    What's in my brake fluid?

I just noticed this when checking all my fluids the other day. This is after sitting all night, -22 degrees Celsius outside, slightly warmer in the non heated garage. I noticed it a few days ago though and it was only minus 10. Was not visible when I tried to show my friend who's a licensed...

    Long term car projects

I posted a couple of these pics in the "unbeat a beater" thread, but realized this is kind of a different thing. It was and always will be a beater. There are missing parts in the interior, always something broken or rattling a bit, etc but the AC works and it's reliable and gets 24mpg on the...
