    Triumph Van

Standard Triumph were the controlling group in British Leyland, I guess being there first they looked down on the others, so we got the TR7 as the sports car. They dropped the Leyland van and BMC had the van market, the J4 becoming the Leyland Sherpa becoming the Leyland DAF becoming the LDV van.

    Triumph Van

Normally a Standard Atlas, Leyland Atlas or Leyland 15 or 20, never seen one branded as a Triumph. Leyland owned Standard Triumph at that stage, before they got the rest of the British motor industry dumped on them. Same running gear as a TR4. As an apprentice we maintained a fleet of Leyland...

No EGR/DPF Diesel better off with A3/B4 oil vs HDEO ? Manual specs both....

EGR on a diesel is almost opposite of a petrol engine, the EGR is wide open at idle on a diesel and will generally be shut under high load when exhaust temps are highest.

    Isuzu D-Max 4JJ3 engine oil thoughts - Castrol 5w30LL, Mobil 1 5w30 ESP, Fuchs GT1 5w30/40

We have Magnatec 5-30 Professional in our bulk tank and it goes in nearly all common rail diesels, but the oil sites recommend 15-40 CK-4 for these so would go with that. But, with 5-30 being the original fill I don't think it really matters.

1996 Land Cruiser Prado smoke and intermittent rattle after mechanical diesel injector rebuild

Never seen them crack a head without being cooked...but that's a bit chicken or egg. With the black smoke at idle I'd be looking at pump timing.

1996 Land Cruiser Prado smoke and intermittent rattle after mechanical diesel injector rebuild

What colour smoke - black, white ? Why was the head replaced ? Cracked I presume, so that means overheated prior. Was the precomp chamber volume checked and compared between heads ? Has anyone fiddled with pump timing or touched the max fuel screw ?

10 reasons the Honda Fit is super hot in 2026

It's Fit in Japan, China and North (maybe South) America, and Jazz in the rest of the world. The Jazz has l/100km, the Japanese Fit has km/l.

10 reasons the Honda Fit is super hot in 2026

I have a 2005 Honda Airwave, sometimes called the Shuttle, the station wagon version of the Fit. It has the L15 Vtec engine where only one intake valve works at lower engine speeds, the normal 1.3 and 1.5 have 2 valves and twin spark. They are made for CVTs and the L13 engine just surfs on it's...

Removing dog smell from inside of vehicle

Bought a 2005 Nissan Expert cheap about 10 years ago off a trade in yard, it seriously stunk of dog. We gutted and shampooed etc, and heard that the dog hairs can cause the smell, so gave the Granddaughter a pair of tweezers and set her to work.

2026 Beijing Auto Show - on the bleeding edge

This is the EV sales for New Zealand last month. Small country, so the figures are low, so ignore that, but not insignificant for our fleet. We also import used vehicles, probably almost what are sold new. Tesla, Kia, Suzuki and Toyota are in there, the rest are Chinese.

    Auto Industry Employment

56 years as a mechanic, I started my apprenticeship in 1970 and am an ''A Grade'' certified mechanic in NZ. I have had no ambition to ''work my way up'', fixing things is my calling. I have worked on everything, run several workshops and had my own for 11 years. For the last 6 years have been...

    Done to death

I've never had OCD, and find myself just shaking my head over what people get concerned about.

    Who is using 10w-30?

Putting this in my Honda Airwave now, I normally run a 5-30, but this was super cheap and Supercheap. The Honda likes thin 30's for good fuel economy, the Friction Fighter is 10.3 cst @ 100c, so should be good. Nearly every car in NZ has a Ryco filter.

How old is your oldest motorcycle?

My oldest bike is a 1974 Moto Guzzi Stornello 160...I bought it brand new in 1978. Of 8 bikes only 2 had been sold in that time and one used for spares, we bought the other 5 for $3000 cash. So I've had it for awhile and never got around to selling it, it's just part of my life. Broke a crank...

    E-bikes and thoughts

This is what I built the eKona for. Even with an ebike it was a hard slog, and people do it with analogue bikes, but with huge sprockets.

Kawasaki KT250 Trials Bike - Clutch Stuck. Why?

I used to have a KT250, lots of problems, but never that one. Using a 2 stroke trials bike in it's natural element, they will suck water into the gearbox soon as you hit water, change after every trial. My KT started to smoke more than it should, but I could smell what it was, gearbox oil. The...

    Pedal configuration in right-hand drive?

Depends on the country of manufacture, not the manufacturer. Japan always has the indicator on the right, same for Australia and New Zealand. Used to be the same for the UK too, but now as most of their cars are made in Europe, and there is a lot of cross channel travel they have the Euro system...

Other way round, the TR used the same rear suspension as the Triumph 2000.

What are you working on today?

1977 MkII Triumph 2000. What's the Churchill tool ? We used to borrow the puller from the dealership back in the '70's, but other tools can work...if you are careful, it's easy to bend the flange.
