Eastern Canadian gas jumping up with move to summer gas

Just saw a news article that gas in southern Ontario will be jumping up 14 cents a litre overnight to a price of about $1.79/litre tommorow. Says the cause is the switch over to summer gas; but I don’t remember it jumping up THIS much from that? Anyway, the summer driving season begins, lol!!

Brian Mulroney, former Canadian PM, dead at 84

Brian Mulroney, Canada’s 18th Prime Minister, has died at 84 years of age. May be of interest to our mostly American audience bc of his negotiation of the Free Trade agreement between the two countries, which had big business impacts on both sides of the border. Also, he scrapped the...

Low Nat Gas prices = another glut of GTL for base oil?

Just saw in the news that natural gas prices have dropped very, very low due to a warm winter. Producers are sitting on stuffed storage sites. Wonder if the production of GTL base oils will ramp up, and will start being used in a lot more oils due to its cheapness?

Post Covid-World work life; changes for you, or back to the same?

So, Covid is basically ‘over’. It did massive disruptions to our way of life - the economy shut down, some lost jobs, lots started to work from home. Covid-related disruptions caused massive inflation and some scarcity. Now that it is ‘over’, we have gone back to ‘normal’; but it is not normal...

    2-stroke oil as stabilizer

Cant really find the answer, I’m sure it’s here… Does adding a small amount of two-cycle oil to gas act as a fuel stabilizer at all? I go through small engine gas fairly quick, but I still add stabilizer to make sure. Out of it right now, but have some two-stroke oil…close to the same effect?

Bulk oil tanks and dispensers - when did they start?

Just curious if anyone knows when bulk oil tank and dispensing guns came into common use for lube shops? I’d imagine it was the 1960’s, as car use and the industry got a lot busier. If you watch ‘car service’ videos from the 1950’s, they usually show them opening individual cans. Just curious…

Shell Nito+ 93-octane premium in Canada

Seeing ads on Facebook for Shell Canada stations starting to offer ‘Nitro+ 93 octane premium’ at certain stations in Canada. Don’t know if this is old news, and I haven’t actually seen it bc I don’t tend to fill up at Shell, just thought it was interesting to see another choice in a 91+ octane...

Irving Oil ‘might’ be up for sale…

Might come to nothing, but the Canadian oil firm Irving Oil is completing a ‘strategic review’ that may or may not involve the partial or whole sale of the company. Difficult to believe that with just how hard they worked to build it up, the Irving family would even muse about a sale…interesting...

Canadian Tire gas stations re-branding as Petro-Canada stations!

Canadian Tire is partnering with Suncor’s Petro-Canada; and re-branding it’s stations as Petro-Canada stations. This is unreal - CT has spent decades developing its gas-station brand, now it will disappear? Don’t get me wrong - I actually think this is great, as Petro-Canada makes great fuels...

    Harry Belafonte, RIP at 96

Harry Belafonte has died at 96. Reading his obit, didn’t realize half the stuff he did, what a life. Dad was a big fan, listened to it growing up, fun stuff!

    1970’s M1 5W-20 = HPL 10W-20?

Just thinking aloud…maybe too much…but go down the rabbit hole with me if you will… 1974 Mobil makes M1 5W-20 oil. From what we know of this oil, it was ‘basically’ a straight 20-weight PAO oil that met 5W requirements. Back then, J300 wasn’t the same, and cold-temp cranking tests were 5...

Slick 50 is now a ‘ceramic’ engine treatment

Glancing at the oil-additives section at work the other day, and the boxes of Slick 50 oil treatment now say ‘ceramic engine treatment’. I just found it interesting that Slick 50 is the latest product to jump on the ‘ceramic’ bandwagon.

John Dodd’s ‘The Beast’ is for sale

Those who are into hot-rodding have most likely heard of Englishman John Dodd’s 1970’s custom car, The Beast; a 27-litre Merlin engine powered ‘wagon’. He died a couple of years ago, and it seems his creation is for sale in an auction; I can’t find a link to it, but Car and Classic auctions(?)...

    Oil Score!

These don’t happen too often…browsing in Princess Auto, a ‘bit of everything mechanical’ store, and found a box of 6-1 quart bottles of QS full-syn 5W-30 API SP marked down from $59.99 to $19.99! Up here in Canada, that is a steal for synthetic oil!

    Small, V-6 powered coupes…miss them!

Back in the late 1980’s/early 1990’s the market was full of small ‘sporty’ coupes that had the option of a small-displacement V-6, that usually had about 120-140HP: Oldsmobile Firenza GT 2.8 Oldsmobile Calais 3.0 Buick Sometset 3.0 Chev Cavalier Z-24 2.8 Plymouth Duster 3.0 Mazda MX-3 1.8 Chev...

    Ultramar ‘Ultramax’ gasoline

I know it is probably the same as any other gasoline detergent package, but Ultramar gas stations in Canada are now advertising a new ‘Ultramax’ gasoline additive. It claims to offer twice the detergency level required by Canadian regulations for gasoline detergent levels. It seems to be a new...

Have you changed your driving habits?

Have gas prices changed your driving habits yet? Making less trips? Driving slower? Buying/using a different vehicle? No changes here - drive 75 miles highway per day to and from work, already drive at the limit bc of a speeding ticket, and rarely go out when not working, just keep myself busy...

    High-end filters out at WM??

Was at the WM next to my work tonight, and was surprised to find a clearance section full of Fram Ultra Synthetic filters. Found one for my wife’s Jeep (10060) for $7! Checked out the regular filter section near by, and found only Extra Guards on the shelf - TG and XG not in the section...

New Mobil Full Synthetic - anyone using it?

Hasn’t been out long, I know, just curious if anyone else has it in their vehicle. I just installed 5 quarts in my 2009 Pontiac G5 for my winter oil. Got it on sale at Canadian Tire up here for $23/jug; which is a good price up here.

Nightmare winter commutes - got one?

So, as I posted about a month ago, I got a much better position at the chain I work for in another small town 37 miles from mine. The commute in nice weather, is very nice - not too long, and pleasant scenery, no traffic issues..etc. However, winter is approaching fast, and this commute on a 2...
