The tale of gas cans continues

I have a few flavors of the CARB approved gas cans. All but the No-Spill brand are total junk. As the old ones fail, I replace them with these No-Spill ones. Best plastic gas can on the market IMO.

    OPE in California

The average homeowner is not going to rebuild a battery pack. Let's face it, there are otherwise good appliances in the landfill that could have been repaired if not for the cost of the repair. When the cost to repair a 3-5 year old item approaches the cost to replace with new, the old item most...

    Mobil 1 4T vs Castrol 4T?

The Mobil 1 Racing 4T is good stuff. My ST1300 liked it and never had any shifting problems at all for 6000 miles, could have gone longer to Honda's recommended 8K OCI but I changed it at the end of the season. I have also run Valvoline Syn, Castrol ActEvo and a Frankenbrew of all three in the...

    New Honda Generator Oil Questions

I broke my EU2000i in on Honda 10w30 oil. They filled it when I bought it and gave me a quart of it. I changed the oil after 30 minutes of running to get the initial break-in glitter out of the engine. Then I changed every 2-5 hours until the drained oil came out clean (without any metal...

    More magnetic dipstick pics.

I use them in my two Honda generators. They always have a little something on them. One neat observation is they collect particles while in storage, too. I'll wipe it clean after a long run, then put the generator away. Next time I check the oil before a run there will be a small amount of stuff...

Getting ready for new generator....questions (of course!).

Stabil Marine 360 does NOT raise the vapor pressure of the gasoline. If it did, the little bottle of Stabil would balloon out in warm weather due to the increased vapor pressure and it would vent like opening a can of soda when you removed the cap. Stabil adds anti-oxidizers and other bits to...

Getting ready for new generator....questions (of course!).

Those 'empty tank' instructions will leave old fuel trapped in the fuel line and a little in the bottom of the tank. Re-order #2 and #3. This will drain the last bit from the tank and fuel line. 1 - Empty tank (siphon and run gas out of carb or run generator to empty unloaded) 3 - Drain...

    OPE in California

I'll let others be the pioneers on electric OPE. The thought of tossing an otherwise good piece of electric equipment in the trash in a few years because the battery went bad makes my stomach churn. I'm sure it will be cheaper to buy a new and improved unit with new batteries included than it...

Getting ready for new generator....questions (of course!).

Also, when done doing what samven said above, pull the starter cord and turn the engine over slowly until you feel resistance. This puts the engine in the compression stroke where the intake and exhaust valves are closed and helps seal off the piston and cylinder from outside air and possible...

Sales of commercial mowers with 25.1HP engines will surge.

Getting ready for new generator....questions (of course!).

As said above, remove the loads and then shut it down. It is safer for the appliances that you are running to disconnect them first. Also, the generator surges up and down while running out of gas. This creates voltage sags and surges that can kill appliances and also stress the generator...

    Motorcycle oil filters

I'm using Mobil 1 M-110A automotive oil filters on my motorcycles and my Honda CR-V at the moment. I buy them when on sale and keep a few in the garage. I've used Purolator, Bosch, Fram, OEM Honda and Mobil 1. All seem to function just fine. Oil I've used Valvoline 4T conventional and...

Getting ready for new generator....questions (of course!).

An old trick motorcycle guys use to help keep their carbureted motors running even after long-term storage is to use a little 2-cycle oil in the gas. I add 1oz of TCW-3 marine 2-cycle oil to a 5 gallon gas can, in addition too the Stabil (the blue marine kind). The oil mix is only 640:1, so...

Getting ready for new generator....questions (of course!).

The magnetic dipstick continues to pull ferrous debris out of the oil even when the engine is not running. After you stop the engine, wipe the dipstick clean and reinstall. After a week or so, pull the dipstick and you'll see it attracted more ferrous material that was suspended in the oil. Now...

    Hype behind Shell Rotella T6?

The hype is the price is low and people seem to like it. It does well in some bikes and not so well in others. I tried T6 5W-40 and found that I have to change it after 2-3000 miles because the shift quality degrades. I no longer use Rotella. For me, it is a false savings to pay less for oil but...

Getting ready for new generator....questions (of course!).

Go ahead and break it in at your convenience. Engines have been running for over a hundred years without a magnetic dipstick.

Double check the chain tension before you ride it away. Shops tend to err on the side of too tight.

Change unused oil? (2years standing still in garage)

The oil should be fine. If you are worried about it, change it. No sense losing sleep over it.

    Valvoline VR1

I believe the meaning of this is that a mower will fall apart, wheels fall off and the deck with rust through long before the engine will wear out (in a typical residential use case). Therefore, why spend the extra dollars on special oil?
