    Better MPG with pure gas.

Yes, true for radial tires. Bias ply tires disappeared in the late 70s. I remember a '75 Olds came with radials but a '76 still came with bias belted. So they were phasing out bias belted tires around then. So if you remember bias belted tires …. Just for you kids (anyone under 55 lol), a...

    Better MPG with pure gas.

OK, basic info here: Low tire pressure will result in the inside and outside edges wearing. High pressure will result in the center wearing. There is an ideal tire pressure for each application where the wear will be even across the tire. This ideal pressure will also result in a balance of the...

Anybody drinking more liquor these days?

1 beer mid afternoon (I'm retired) then wine with dinner. The wine with dinner started a year ago after we did a tour of France. We don't even get a buzz but drink to enjoy the flavors. We did stock up on wine a few weeks ago.

What would kill batteries in < 20 mo for daily driver in temperate climate?

Quote +3 Mazdas are notorious for this. Didn't know that but not surprised. My 2012 Mazda3 drains the battery if left sitting for 2 weeks. Called the dealer and they said its 'normal' (yeah this was 8 yrs ago). So got a trickle charger for when I have to leave it sit. This is my mall crawler...

    Bad Rear Brakes- Not obvious

Hi from the salt belt (been living here since the late 70s). Another thing for the spring brake maintenance list is to clean out the slots the brake pads ride in. The other year, found flaking rust in the slots had bound up the pads and kept them from moving. Had to knock the pads out with a...

"Electric Cars Are Cleaner, Even When The Power Comes From Coal" -Forbes Mag

The title is totally BS as this line right from the article summarizes that coal-fired power generation is bad. (no matter what you use the electricity for. Nuff said) "The only exceptions are countries such as Poland, where the electricity network is still mostly based on coal-fired power...

Stripped Bolt hole for rear shock

If you are thinking of saving the remaining threads, the different bolt size will ruin the remaining threads. If you are going to bolt it up like you described with a nut and washers, that would be the easiest fix that will work. But use a nylok nut to ensure the bolt doesn't loosen. To the...

    Trailblazer tire pressures

^^ this. Start with the listed pressure. Watch how the tires are wearing and go from there. I know, lots of drivers don't look at their tires unless they are rolling away from the vehicle on the road. So for those types, why does tire pressure matter? On an important note: the listed pressure...

    Uneven Pad Wear?

The slots in the calibers rusted so much that they pinched the ears on the pads so they would only ratchet inward. Lots of flaking rust. First time on a 08 Nissan Xterra and I've been living in the rust belt and owning cars since the 70s. This is a new one on me. I have had to touch up the ears...

Stripped Bolt hole for rear shock

Check this: The tube on the shock where the bolt passes thru, might go inside the diameter of the mount and seat on a land (I think I see it in your early picts). If it does, make sure you don't damage the land when drilling out the remaining threads. Make sure you can get a nut and wrench up...

how hard is it to change struts?

Since the Saturn is a beater (hope I didn't offend you), quick struts are cheap and the easiest to install. If you will be doing struts on other vehicles in the future, then invest in a spring compressor so you can install higher quality dampers than what come on the quick struts.

Stripped Bolt hole for rear shock

It looks like you can get a nut and wrench up inside the shock mount structure. If you can, the simplest fix would be to drill out the remaining thread in the mount so a new bolt will pass thru. Then bolt the shock in using a nylok nut and washer = done.

Yokohama Avid Ascend GT Wearing Badly

More caster = tighter straight ahead tracking. That's what the driver can feel/enjoy. But you have to be over 6 deg and pushing 7 deg to feel any of the tracking benefit. May have to do with what the design of each vehicle allows.

    18v impact driver/wrench

IMO a 1/4 inch impact is too light for when you need to use an impact. Sure, it will work for a while but going forward.... I consider 3/8 a minimum (I have 3/8 and 1/2). A 100 ft-lbs may be what the installation specs says but real life (like corrosion, idiot shop installer, etc) may triple...

How to break stuck rotors free

Why didn't he tap the rotor with the hammer from the back? That works for me. Also usually don't have room in the back to use an impact like that. Maybe using a right angle impact might fit. But still, tap with BFH from the back works.

    Sizing Chainsaws

Had a lightweight Poulan for many years. It got tired and I got tired of it. I'm 5'6" and 125 lbs. Chainsaw weight will kill my back so got the smallest Stihl that used a full size chain (MS230C). 35 cc, 16 inch and It also has tool-ess chain tensioning and a recoil spring pull start (yeah, I'm...
