Having done a 3 year enlistment in the Army in the late 60's (half of it in Nam) I honestly can't recommend it to any sane person. A friend enlisted in the Air Force at the same time and it sounded like his experience was much better. Also take anything a recruiter says with suspicion. Best of luck.

I have owned several with 3.0 and 4.0 OHV engines with 5 speed trans and they were very durable and low maint. The 4.0 OHV is noisy on startup even when new, but keeps on running. I like 5w-30 in the 3.0 and 10w-30 in the 4.0 I'm not comfortable with the OHC version timing chain setups.

I have used green bottle in my Ranger and red HM in my exploder for several years and am very happy with both. I used to use PYB until they dropped the moly in the new formula. I think formula shell is also a good value. Just an old man's opinion.

Is this a OHV or OHC engine? I used Bosch on my OHV 4.0 50k ago and they have been fine. The OHV 4.0 has a very tight turn on the driver side front plug to protect it from heat and I was concerned that such a bend would cause problems but so far so good.

It looks just like the factory fill that I drained from my 2004 Ranger with 500 miles on the OD. Except I had a nasty hooked metal shaving (bolt thread?) and lots of glitter! Replaced with PYB 5w-30 instead of fill cap 5w-20. No worries!

Short answer: Use Rotella T SAE 30 (rated SJ) it comes in 4 or 5 quart jugs at Walmart. It's great stuff for an application like yours.

I believe that 2nd and OD use the same servo, so unless 2nd is slipping/flairing, I doubt the trans is worn out. I would get it looked at at an independant shop and get an estimate. You will wind up with a blown engine and tranny if you drive it as you suggested...My 2 cents. I have the same...

Heartguard or equivilent to prevent it. I used to wrap the squares in fried chicken skin to prevent the dogs from spitting them out. Right down the hatch they went! If dog is coughing they probably have the infestation already. Terrible stuff..

2004 ranger 3.0...Any 5w-20 has always caused a loud lifter clacking for several seconds on a hot restart.Tried GTX 5w-30; it still happened. Any SOPUS 5w-30 I've used..No Clacking! Filler cap states 5w-20. So I have PYB,QS,and FS in my stash.

My sister's Infinity (2004 v6) had many seal issues @ 125000 miles. Possibly avoided with a good HM 5w-30. Also her owners manual states to NOT use synthetic oil?
