I finally gave away the Lawnboy last fall. I just bought a Honda HRX217HXA with the GCV 190 engine. Comon' Spring!

Shifting to neutral at stop light . . . Does this help reduce wear on a AT

While coasting, if you put your transmission in neutral, your fuel system will have to USE FUEL to keep the engine running. However if you leave the transmission in gear it will not use any on most vehicles. You're going to stop anyway. Leave it in gear and take it easier on your brakes and...

    Changing brake fluid?

Manufacturers are recommending 2-3 years for a brake fluid change. I think that is a recommendation everyone can follow no matter what the make or model. Why don't (didn't) some manufacturers recommend brake fluid changes as part of regular maintenance? Maybe it's because pads last longer...

    Changing brake fluid?

What is this thread still going? Stop pontificating brake fluid changes and just do it. Why would you want dirty old brake fluid? The most important system in your car is the braking system. Why blow it off? There is so much intricate talk about lubrication for the engine... but brake fluid...

Shifting to neutral at stop light . . . Does this help reduce wear on a AT

Sitting still causes uneven cooling of the brake discs, not pushing the brake pads against them. Therefore it's probably best with hot brakes to leave the transmission in gear and creep forward every 5-10 seconds, thereby not isolating one part of the rotor from the same cooling rate as the...

What are you gonna do with all those SL oil when the new oil come out?

Fortunately, the auto manufacturers are not going to change the oil recommendation in your owner's manual from SL to SM. If SL works in your car today, it will work in your car just as well in two years.

Changing the oil without the filter?

If I'm reading my Honda owner's manuals correctly, you can change your oil filter every other oil change, or every year, whatever comes first. This makes me wonder whether or not oil filter materials deteriorate over time due to the nature of engine oil and chemical contaminants. Therefore...

Changing the oil without the filter?

Using an effective anti-drainback-valve? There is definitely a difference in time between normal startup and startup after a filter change, even with a "half-fill" that is the best you can do on Honda 4-bangers. I think the oil filter lasts longer on newer cars. I would not suggest to everyone...

Changing the oil without the filter?

I generally agree. But when the oil filter is hard to get to and it makes a difference in whether you do it yourself or take it to a shop, there can be a much bigger price differential.

Changing the oil without the filter?

I'm still waiting to see oil analysis that shows not changing the oil filter every other change is bad. I think somebody on this board is executing this test... I already posted on this subject, you might be interested in the replies...

    Syn payback on fuel economy?

I think some may need to recalculate based on rising fuel prices! The answer in my book is "probably". As long as: (1) your engine doesn't "use" oil. (2) The particular engine benefits from synthetic use, as in tight tolerance, or good computer control, will use less fuel (esp. at idle) if...

Starting car with A/C on--bad practice or not?

There are probably some years/makes/models of cars where you should turn off the A/C before starting the car, but probably not many THESE days. If you let your A/C run right up until the engine is turned off you get a pissy STANK in the evaporator. I also agree it's best to shut it off a...

    Changing brake fluid?

I think the majority of people agree that brake fluid must be changed every 3 years at a minimum as part of responsible maintenance schedule. Person(s) who say otherwise are in the majority and aren't planning on paying for your neglect (repairs, brake failure) when you follow their advice. I...

Tip: "Reviving" a Cap-Style Oil Filter Wrench

There is a sharp piece of metal on this particular car (gen-1 CRV) that is right up against the filter and prevents twisting off by hand without cutting yourself On all my cars I use a cap wrench attachment on *** [ April 30, 2004, 12:17 PM: Message edited by: S2000driver ]

Tip: "Reviving" a Cap-Style Oil Filter Wrench

I went to remove an oil filter using a cap-style oil wrench. Even though both the attachment and the filter were dry, it kept twisting off under torque, instead of turning the filter. It was very tight access, I was low on options. So instead of running out for a new one, I decided to try to...
