    Hyundai Dealership Rant

So this is less of a question and more of a rant, but i would appreciate any input as to what the average BITOG'er would do... I bought a new 2017 Hyundai Elantra in late 2016. So far i've been very happy with the car, but less than happy with the dealership. The only service i've had done so...

    Pennzoil SM 10W30

I sent this sample of virgin oil to Blackstone to get numbers on the batch before i ran it in my car. I plan to run a UOA on the same oil after 3000-4000 miles. The quart i took this from was shaken and opened new just prior to taking sample. Oil: Pennzoil 10W30 (Yellow bottle dino) Packaging...

Supertech oil info for WPP/WNE oils

I emailed Warren Performance (WPP) regading an oil question, and they turned me on to their new website for their oils. It is www.mag1.com This is their own brand, which appears to be the same oil that is sold at some Walmarts showing the WPP or WNE symbol on the bottom of the packaging. Their...

    Saab sold to Spyker

Not sure if this was posted already somewhere, but i found it of interest. Saab sold to Dutch company Spyker in last minute deal which saves Saab from death. Edit: My appologies, this was already posted by addyguy in this thread: http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/forums/ubb...nt=2&page=1 Please...

    Shear and low temp viscosity

We have all seen 10w30 and 5w30 oils shear down to a high 20 weight oil after a few thousand miles. We know this due to the viscosity @ 40*C and 100*C reported on UOA's. Im curious though, what effect does shear have on the viscosity at lower temps at which the 5w and 10w are measured? Does it...

    Spark Plug Gap Question

On my Mazda, the manual calls for a spark plug gap of .028 to .031 (7 to 8 mm). Now my question is, which is it? The perfectionist in me wants to have it dead-on accurate. Does it not make a big difference as long as it's close? This is for a Mazda V6 with electronic ignition.

Mercon V vs Dex III Mercon

I recently had my transmission fluid flushed. While my owners manual calls for DexIIIMercon, as we all know, it has since been replaced by Mercon V. I had my trans fluid flushed at a local shop however and went with the same old Formula Shell Dex III Mercon + Lubegard Red that i've been using...

Pennzoil dino 10w30 noack volatility question

I was just reading several spec sheets for various 10w30's and 5w30's and noticed something curious. Pennzoil 10w30 dino list the volatility at 10.9. Could this be a typo? This seems unusually low, almost down in synthetic and high-mileage territory. Is volatility alone a significant...

    New Walmart Supertech bottles

Forgive me if this has been covered, but i could not seem to find anything on it during a search. On a recent trip to Wally World, i noticed that the Supertech Bottles appear to be somewhat different. They have what looks like the WPP number on the side, but the part number stamp does not start...

Pennzoil / Shell rebranded as PepBoys Proline?

I was browsing the shelves at my local PepBoys today and noticed a curious thing. I had always thought that PepBoys house brand oil "ProLine" was made by Warren Performance Products. However i noticed the telling "HLPA" stamped on all the Proline oil cases, which i believe suggest it is Pennzoil...

DEXIII Mercon -vs- MerconV flash point

Why is it when looking at the PDS sheets for various ATF's the flash point of several DexIII/Mercon ATF's seem to be higher than the flash point of most MerconV's? In addition, Supertech (WPP) seems to have one of the highest flash points?!? If heat is the ultimate killer of ATX's then why are...

Mazda GF4A-EL Auto Transmission fill question

I have a 2001 Mazda 626-V6 with a Japanese built GF4A-EL automatic tranny. I'd read that "some" trannys benefit, or at least will not be hurt, by overfilling the tranny a slight amount. I'm curious if my transmission is one prone to being sensitive about fill amounts being slightly over...

    TropArtic Observation regarding service class

In roaming the oil aisle at my local walmart the other day i was reading the back label of the TropArtic oils they had. I noticed on the 10w30 TropArtic Syn-Blend that is was listed as a SM/CF oil (along the top, not in the API donut), yet the 5w30 was only listed as a SM oil (No CF). I...

    Mixing ATF's

I'm certain this has been covered but for the life of me i cant seem to find reliable information... Can Dexron/Mercon III and Mercon V be mixed in a transmission that is spec'd for Mercon and has been now approved for Mercon V? Car has 100% DexronIII/Mercon in it now and thinking of doing a...

Bucket method tranny flush for 1998-2002 Mazda 626

Anyone ever done the DIY bucket tranny flush method for a 1998-2002 Mazda 626-V6 with 4 speed auto tranny? The 1998-2002 doesn't have the traditional cooler hoses going into the radiator, instead it uses some kind of heat exhanger method, but locating just which hose and where to disconnect has...

Reasons not to use Mercon V vs Dex/Mercon III ?

Sometime in the near future i will be attempting my first DIY auto tranny flush via the bucket method. My 2001 car came with Dexron/Mercon III from the factory. Any reason i should not 'upgrade' to Mercon V? Also, regardless of going with DexIII vs Mercon V is there a brand or brands that...

High MIleage Oil application / SM question

I've done some searching, but have yet to come up with an answer, so here is my rambling question... I have a 2001 Mazda 626 with the Mazda KL 2.5 liter DOHC V6. It has a solid lifter pack, so no HLA's to worry about. However the valve train is somewhat noisey and seems to be particularly picky...

    DipStick wierdness depending on viscosity

I have gone back and forth between 5w30 and 10w30. My car allows for both, and i enjoy experimenting with various brands in both 5w30 and 10w30. One thing i have noticed is that with 5w30 it is really difficult to check the oil when the engine is warm. It is if it is too thin to show properly...

    Afraid of Supertechs blue button

So today during an oil change i was out of my usual Nippon oil filters i buy online, so i picked up a Supertech filter at Walmart. I've used them many a time and had no problem. However this was one of the 'new' design with the blue plastic button bypass in the bottom. I didn't like it, but i...

Dex III in p/s.... safe to use Merc IV ?

My mazda owners manual calls for Dex III in the power steering. This winter i've noticed my power steering pump has been a little whinny for the first 30-40 seconds after start-up so i've been considering replacing the p/s fluid to see if that perhaps may help prolong the life of the pump. My...
