I want to try a "designer" oil.

I have been using Mobil1 0w40 for almost the entire life of the car, save for three oil changes with GC, but at almost eight dollars a quart, I might as well get something crazy. Which should I get, Red Line or Amsoil? Personally, I like Red Line better.

    Fuel Dilution and Oil Consumption

How much fuel dilution would it take to increase oil consumption? My 93 850 had a broken thermostat, but because the gauge is a "dumb" gauge (if it's not overheating and not cold, it's dead middle, which is supposedly normal) so I didn't know it had a broken one until I removed the thermostat...

    Valvoline SynPower Questions

I have picked up a case of Valvoline MaxLife full synthetic 5w30 for my old 850 that is having a small issue with the valve stem seals. There isn't much talk about this oil on this forum, but I was wondering, would Valvoline Synpower 5w40 be a good oil in my S60? Will it hold up to my 7500...

Mobil1 HM or Rotella T Syn for oil consumption

I don't have the time to rebuild the cylinder head on my 850 (see sig). The valve stem seals are leaking (common) and I am trying to find an oil that will reduce consumption until I can get all of the parts I need to rebuild the cylinder head. Currently, I use Mobil1 10w40 high mileage. It...

    Leaving on the Lexol Remains

I have been a user of Lexol for a long time. It seems to work well with my painted leather (which I regret buying, I should have taken the darker dyed leather that looks better as it ages). Following the directions on the bottle, I use an applicator pad and put an even coat of Lexol on all...

    Oil Smells Burnt

I noticed yesterday, while making sure my oil is still topped up after 5000 miles, that the oil smells burnt. I do nothing but highway, I have no turbo, and there is a coolant-oil heat exchanger. The engine is immaculate and runs perfectly. Does good combustion make oil smell burnt?

    Gold Headlamps

I found these: http://www.suvlights.com/product_info.php?products_id=216 I was wondering. Do they really make it easier to see in inclimate weather? Are they legal? (I have read a lot of pages on this, and nothing seems definite). Do they last?

Difference between Pennzoil Synthetic and PP?

I was browsing the clearance racks in the automotive section of my local KMart tonight and noticed that there were about 30 quarts of Pennzoil Synthetic motor oil marked to five dollars a quart. However, they had bottles of Pennzoil Platinum on the shelves selling for around 7 dollars a quart...

ATF exchange. By mileage, time, or color?

I have put close to 70K miles on my ATF and it is still bright red and smells new. What is the best procedure on ATF service? When should I change it? If you were wondering, my owners manual says it is lifetime fluid and should never be changed. Unless I use my car for towing or as a taxi...

    Observations on GC 0w30 and M1 0w40.

Today, while changing the oil in my 04 S60, I do my normal routine of checking to make sure everything is staying clean and nothing is forming in the oiling system. When I first purchased the vehicle, it had 50K miles on it. The engine wasn't taken well care of, but it was far from what I would...

    Rock Chips in Front Bumper

While detailing my car today and scrubbing my fingers off to get all of the bug guts off, I couldn't help but be reminded of the numerous rock chips in my white bumper (that is made out of black plastic, so it looks like [censored]). I was thinking about buying a new pre-painted bumper from...

Over the road truck oil change intervals.

I don't know anything at all about big rigs, other than the basic ideas behind how and why diesel engines work. Other than that, I am in the dark. Something I have always wondered about a vehicle that spends 99% of it's life on the highway; what kind of oil change interval do they use? and how...

    Pure Naphtha as an Additive

Where I work, we get brake parts cleaner in 55 gallon drums. All of the labels have been removed, however, this seems to be a similar product. http://docs.google.com/gview?a=v&q=cache...pdf&hl=en&gl=us I know that a few engine cleaners use naphtha as a solvent to break down deposits in the...

    Volvo Engine Oil Requirements

I was digging through our diagnostic, service and parts information system today and came across something interesting. I put in my vehicle information (2004 Volvo S40 with a B5244S non turbo engine with a 5 speed automatic FWD gearbox) and the oil requirements for all markets was displayed in...

    Water - for leather?

I was detailing my car at work while we were slow last week. An older tech in the shop told me that I was doing it all wrong. He said I didn't need any of that "Meguiars garbage". He asked me if I had ever looked at the section in my owners manual about cleaning the interior. I answered...

    IR 2135Ti Modifications

I have been looking at my gun during my 6 month disassembly and cleaning. I am trying to find a way to get even more power out of it. Has anyone here tried modifying an impact wrench for more power? If I understand the properties of these tools correctly, the weight of the hammers will...

    Oil Addative or Oil Change

I tried searching, but your search returns off the wall results for threads that I know exist around here, so I apologize for asking a question that has probably been heard a million times. My 1993 850 with 260K miles on it has leaky valve stem seals (common on whiteblocks). I'm losing about a...

Comparison of PAO the POE oils

I have noticed that there are three major forms of synthetic oils. The major one being: modified base stocks. Which is where the company producing the oil uses conventional oil, and "hydrocracks" the hydrocarbon chains into the lengths they want. Eg: Castrol Syntec Then theres where I get...

    Graphited Oils

I have done a search, and all I seem to find here is stuff saying about bad the OLD graphited engine oils are. Well, they have new ones! http://www.marly.com/en/products/oils/black.htm Its micronized graphite and whatnot. I had an instructor at school tell me about a customer that brought...
