Since I'm under wtty, the Mobil 1 is a more comfortable choice to me. It's the 'meets or exceeds' vs outright approval. The Castrol has a plus in that it's a vis that is mentioned in my owner's manual

So you see no real reason for the mid saps vs full other than a transition (due to US mogas sulfur having been higher)?

Checked some recommendations outside of US and it's somewhat varied. Shell UK, FR or Ger all say 0W20. Castrol EU recommends 0W30 with an alternative 5W30 mentioned. Q8 UK - 0W20, 5W30, 0W30. I found a UK owner's manual and it lists from 0W20 to 5W40. Approval LL04, LL12FE and LL17FE+ One...

Hmm. I usually diy oil changes, but this is something I'd consider if it were possible to get them to use a "better" oil.

I assume there isn't much difference between LL17FE+ and LL19 as these two look like the same oil. That should bolster my argument if I ever got into an engine wtty issue with BMW after using the 0W-30. Make sense??

Seems like I have 2 primary choices... 1. Change to a LL01 or LL04 0W30 which I'd do with the Castrol Edge 0W30 that @edyvw linked and take the chance that I have no engine wtty claim and/or BMW doesn't do a forensic on the oil. If I have a engine wtty issue I can change out to the "correct"...

Certainly is. Not sure I still want to push BMW on wtty issues.

Maybe my question wasn't clear, are you saying no to using a 0W40 or even a 5W40 when out of wtty?

Am I correct in interpreting all of the comments that a 0W-40 with LL01 or 04 isn't right for this engine? (after wtty lapses).

The car won't get tracked or even driven too hard so I'll probably do a change in around 4,000 miles and use the 0W30 Castrol Edge. I'm driving so little, might hit the 1 year mark first. Does anyone have an idea of the HTHS of the 0W20?

If there was an engine problem and wtty claim, do you think BMW could use the fact the oil wasn't LL17 FE+ to deny? Could they even tell what oil was in there?

The manual calls for 0W20 or 0W30. If I did a quick oc I'd put in 0W30
