    Redline in older BMW V8

I switched to Redline in my 1995 540i mostly because the mechanic who rebuilt the engine in the '58 Porsche swears by it. Redline recommends 10w40 for my car, and that's what is in there now. The recommendation seems a bit arbitrary since very similar engines built after 1997 get a...

    Doug Hillary, question

I have two BMWs with M30B35 sixes. This is 60s era technology but they are good engines. Both have high mileage and both run extremely well. It's time to use my Mobil 1 rebate coupon in a couple of weeks and, since you know Mobil 1 well, I will ask you to choose an oil for me. Being on BITOG has...

recommendations for hot rod BMW M10 engine

BMW 2002 4 cylinder with high compression pistons, hot cam, ported/polished head, high performance exhaust. Should be putting out about 165 horses. I've never had one of these engines beefed to this point. In the past I've always used dino 20w/50 but, since this is a fairly fresh rebuild, I'm...

From 20w50 to 15w40 yields smoother idle in BMW

I bought a '92 525iT several months ago. The quick change oil place sticker on the windshield read 20w50 so I stuck with that when I changed oil. Older BMWs I've owned have usually specified that weight for mild climates and/or warm weather. The car always idled rough especially when cold and I...

Seat of the pants, GC vs Pentosin

Dumped the GC out of my BMW 318iS with M42 engine this weekend after 8000 miles. Replaced it with Pentosin 5w-40 and found immediate noticable difference. The start-up clatter is virtually gone and the engine is much quieter. I think I'll stick to the 40 wts. from now on for these older Bimmers.

Question for BMW M42 engine owners

My wife's '94 318iS has a nasty death rattle from the valve train on cold start up. Is this normal? I have a couple of older M30 engined BMWs and neither do anything like this on first start up. When I went to change the oil, the filter canister was empty of oil though the filter was soaked...

    BMW ambient temp/viscosity chart question

For my 22 year old BMWs the owner's manual recommends 15w-40 for temps between 0F and 85F. On the single grade side of the chart they recommend SAE 30 for temps between 30F and 85F. 10w-40 is limited to ambient temps no greater than around 50 degrees. Why, when Havoline 10w-40 has higher...

    GC in BMW M42

Just dropped out the Auto RX rinse cycle from my BMW 318iS and put in Castrol 0w-30. I know the BMW purists will balk at the use of 30 weight in this engine, but from a purely subjective view the engine noise has lessened noticeably at startup. BITOG has had it's way with me: GC in the 318 and...

    Trying Pentosynth 5w-40

BMW 325 with the M20 engine. I'll do the analysis after about 7500 miles mostly because I seem to have caught the BITOG bug visiting this site. German oil in my German car seems appropriate, though I may try GC in the M42 DOHC 4 cylinder engine in one of the other BMWs, haven't decided.

    Lubro-moly 0w-40

I saw some Lubro-moly 0w-40 on the shelf at the import auto parts store today. Has anyone had any experience with this oil? I'm tempted to try it in my '90 BMW in place of the 15w-40 it's running now as the car seems to like lower viscosity oil.

    Kendall GT-1 10w/50 synthetic blend...

I visited the Kendall website and they seem to have revamped their product line, perhaps as a result of now being part of ConocoPhillips. I noticed a 10-50 blend that would seem a good upgrade for my older BMWs. I've always used Castrol or Kendall 20w/50 in these cars but I am open to new ideas...

    Reassurance sought

I have a 1990 BMW 325 which I recently bought. I changed from whatever nameless dino oil to Amsoil 10w/30. Being obsessive/compulsive about both tires and oil I immediately started to rethink the choice of oil. I emailed Amsoil for reassurance about using a low viscosity oil in a car calling for...
