    Bears in my neighborhood!

1sttruck....I agree the media sensationalizes bear incidents and I'll also agree that often times people contribute to the bear problem through their own stupidity or ignorance. Still, there is a limit to the amount of any one species of wildlife (especially large predators)that a given...

    Bears in my neighborhood!

I live about 15 minutes away from Whimsey and like he, we have our fill of bear encounters. My yard backs up to 300+ acres of woodland with some high ridges and cliffs where more than a few bear (blacks)call home. For the most part they tend to avoid my yard...possibly because of the two large...

    Idiots at Ford!!

Like DustyJoe said, you'll have lots of fun with the spark plugs! Also, I can honestly say that's the first time I ever heard of a torch being used during a fuel filter change . Torch + fuel =

You guys crack me up (JB and Patman). Thanks Crossbow, for answering the ? about the Ranger 2.3 ltr. FWIW...I'll be extending this current interval to 7500 miles UNLESS I manage to get some track time in at Pocono or Watkins Glenn.

Syntec 5w-50, 10K miles, Geo Metro

Looks outstanding and the motor/oil choice is obviously a perfect match! Such great results and with only a 3.5 qt. sump. TR3-2001SE......I don't think anyone is pushing 20w oils as one-size fits all choice. The majority of people who do use 20w oils seem to say they seem to be working well...

Agreed. The M1 held up very well.

Viscosity Where 5W30 Has Sheared Out of Grade?

Made me double check and glad I did. Here are a couple of links that provide good info as to the makeup of Havolne 5w-20/5w-30 (and other useful info). Looks like both those grades are in fact a GII/GII+ mix. Interesting thing is that according to ChevronTexaco all their GII and GII+ base oil...

Isn't that strange how M1 typically shows higher iron. I wonder what it could be that causes that. Other than the Fe, looks like it held up better than Syntec.

Viscosity Where 5W30 Has Sheared Out of Grade?

Look at the link again. Only the most recent sample (the 6920 mile sample) had the LC additive. Also, Havoline 5w-20 is an all group II+ motor oil that costs about $1.20 / qt. and is as commonly found as just about any other motor oil.

Viscosity Where 5W30 Has Sheared Out of Grade?

Judging solely by my own experience with 5w-20 (Havoline to be specific), there has been no evidence of the 20w shearing down and out of grade. Look here http://theoildrop.server101.com/ubb/ultimatebb.php?ubb=get_topic;f=3;t=002450 and you can see that for the three samples I've had analyzed...

    Havoline 5w-20, SL-GF3, 6,920 mile, '04 Mazda6i

I was thinking the same thing. There are differences in a few of the additive levels that were consistent in the previous two uoa reports (calcium, phosphorus, boron).

The latest UOA for my 2004 Mazda 6i is in. This was the last of my SL-GF3 stash so it's GF4 from here on out. This sample was in from Nov. 2004 until the last couple days in March 2005 which is probably the toughest period in this area where motor oil is concerned. As usual, plenty of spirited...

What filter do proffessional mechanics use?

A friend who has owned his shop for over 20 years uses mostly Wix with some Hastings and OE filters mixed in for good measure.

went to NYC auto show today

We didn't hit any of the peripheral shows or demos, we concentrated on the cars. And yes, the Escalades, Hummers and Limos with all manner of bling bling were quite a hit with those who looked like they have "a possie" (sp?). It ain't bling bling if it don't have a set of 22s! Interestingly...

went to NYC auto show today

Took a trip to NYC today and meandered about the auto show with my father (the one responsible for giving me the car bug). We had a great time checking out the various offerings and my dad decided he wants to sell his Benz and buy a Lexus LS430. Can't say as I blame him, the LS430 is quite a car...

    D4 or Hi-Temp Redline

Do yourself a favor and give a call or email to Redline techies and pose the question to them. I did the same thing last spring and the gent I spoke with was very nice and didn't rush me off the phone. He advised against using the Hi-Temp tranny fluid and recommended the D4. He basically echoed...
