    High Detergents/TBN for shorter oci's

Being used in a clean engine, I don't see it standing out. The Group V content is still valuable.

Fram Extra guard oil filter for a Harley

Also, friendly reminder that if the PH6022 works, then the 3614, 3600, and 8A will all have the same threading, same relief valve setting (12psi), and no appreciable difference in gasket. The 3614 is short, 3600 is long, and 8A is long and fat wide.

Piston soak - No Berryman B-12 available. What is next best?

Goof Off is a type of paint thinner. MEK might be less volatile, since a lot of paint thinners use methanol and acetone, which don't stick around much for a soak. B-12 is not astronomically different from those. That which hastily goes after the gunk in your ring pack is tough on elastomers...

What's The Cheapest Steak You'd Eat

We tend to get what's on sale, and I figure out how to make it respectable. Today Chuck Roast was on sale for $4/lb. I grab one that is ~1.5-2" thick. I trimmed it, and cut the denver and chuck eye apart. Prepped a marinade of pineapple juice and salt, letting them sit in it for an hour. I get...

    Still having oil Detergents confusion....

"Many"? The devil's in the details of their wording. Most products are built to fit a spec. The specs are a game of deposit prevention. There's no onus to have varnish removal performance.

For @TiGeo. It just belongs in this thread.

    Still having oil Detergents confusion....

Its a right title-- they are detergents. But not even Tide gets rid of all my stains, so my expectations just need realigning, I guess.

    Still having oil Detergents confusion....

Usually carbon deposits are adhered to the metallic surfaces and adjacent grains by varnish.

No, not carbon deposits on pistons/rings either.

    Still having oil Detergents confusion....

Detergents are there to prevent deposit formation. They can clean up sludge, but are not sufficient to solubilize varnish films. @OVERKILL has a nice flowchart that helps delineate the difference between sludge and varnish. Significant solubility is generally achieved by incorporation of...

Depends on the deposit. Sludge, yes. Varnish, not really, no.

Valvoline Extended Protection HM is a loaded GTL

All I am seeing is higher than average Molybdenum on the VOA for an API SP oil. Sure, that's neat. "Lowering their additives"? - There's also additive packages these days that don't contain a lot of metal. @kschachn has always just tried to keep people's reasoning in check--keep people from...

is LS additive in gear oil in ATV diffs or gearbox harmful?

The LS additives are friction modifiers that act only on wet clutches to reduce stick/slip chattering of LS clutches. They have no meaningful effect on the metallic components. I don't see any clutches in this gearbox. Strange that they recommend a 140wt for the gearbox.

    Honda Shadow Differential

The sulfur compounds, sulfurized olefins, are typically blended to a higher concentration in GL-5, and yes, they affect copper alloys adversely. It is common that a buffer/corrosion inhibitor is included to passivate/protect copper alloy components. To put it short, GL-5 gear oil is a riskier...

    Honda Shadow Differential

I've been scratching my head over this for a few months. Not that I really expect anyone to know--maybe the tribologists might. If bevel gears need GL-4, and the 750 Honda Shadow has a bevel gear final drive, then why do they ask for hypoid gear oil which requires GL-5? Not hard at all to...
