    Power Steering Flushes

One thing not mentioned is the power steering fluid, for lack of a better word, filter. My car developed a significant whine on cold start up, that faded in 10 or 15 seconds. It had about 120K miles and 15 years on the power steering fluid. The reservoir has a very fine brass mesh screen as a...

    Royal Wedding - now watching

I didn't watch the wedding, but saw some pictures. They seemed to dress (relatively) simply for the event, not garish over-the-top. This picture of Ms. Markle struck me in a good way: She seems to have good values and good sense. On a mildly humorous note, she has great taste in hats. I...

    A customers Mobil Super Rant

It's a shame they don't carry it anymore. I use to use it, a good name-brand oil at a very low price. I just moved on to the next inexpensive name-brand oil. I'm one of those heathens that changes my oil frequently, they all work good.

    W/O FACEBOOK?

Never got on Facebook, and now that my suspicions about it are confirmed, never intend to get on Facebook.

    We Will Remember Them.

Spent some time this evening learning about ANZAC Day. Sending my respect on your day of remembrance.

    Teflon tape vs. paste

Used Teflon tape for many years. Keep it back a thread from the end of the fitting. Discussed with coworkers. One mentioned a problem with Teflon tape, I think it was diesel injection systems, or some sort of hydraulic system. If you returned an item and Teflon tape was found inside - warranty...

    Very Basic Engine Question

Second problem with the diagram. The illustration labeled compression is actually ignition. Ignition is the start of the power stroke. It's just a poor diagram. I wouldn't use it.

    Very Basic Engine Question

The diagram is wrong. To make the diagram right you'd have edit the first illustration: 1. Mirror the image of the crankshaft and connecting rod to the left side. 2. Leave the arrow where it is. As a side note, I'd say what they label as compression is actually ignition, but I'll let them...

Shade tree mechanic vs corporate employee?

Some problems are just going to take time to troubleshoot. I imagine it can become a challenge, but rewarding and satisfying when you master the challenge. Unfortunately, this isn't something you can do with someone asking, is it done yet? is it done yet? is it done yet?...

Anyone use a ball peen on their wrenches?

Just for certain jobs, then I use a rubber hammer. Not fussy about what wrench I whack with a rubber hammer.

Strange event at Home Depot yesterday

OP - Good job! May good karma come your way. I - you - we - make the world we live in. P.S. I wouldn't have passed on the Formula Shell at $9.88 5 qt container. There's nothing as satisfying as a $10 oil change.

    Hollywood and real-life...

Any sci-fi flick where there's gravity inside the spaceship. Except of course the centrifuge in Discovery and the space station in 2001.

    Installing oil pressure gauge

x2 on the short pipe nipple. I had used a long piece of pipe on a small gas engine to extend the drain. It broke and dumped the oil, but I caught it in time. It broke due to the vibrations. A car engine doesn't vibrate as much, but you have more stuff hanging off the end. I'd consider using...

    Asthma went away?

The body changes over time. Back when I was in my 30s I started having allergy problems. Testing determined it was a dust mite allergy. I was placed on an inhaler, I think it was twice daily. Sometime later, I think I was in my 40s, I got so sick I didn't bother with the inhaler for several...

Favorite Parents/Grandparents meals of all time?

You had me at home made chicken pot pie. My mother use to roll her own dough, too. A simple meal, but so delicious. If you're ever in Philadelphia, PA, go to the Reading Terminal Market. There's a restaurant there run by the Amish, The Dutch Eating Place. They have a chicken pot pie that's...

    Depression

Of course, seek professional help. For myself, I find the focus of working on something and being productive helps. Getting motivated can be difficult, but idleness just feeds the depression.
