Which Synthetics use group IV base stock?

Excellent material !! (re: post 48) -and considering that article in Machinery Lubrication was over 17 years ago, I'd have to think that base oil development is even further advanced today. It would be great to see them update that article !! Regarding post #54, your statement "--racing oil is...

Would you use 0W30 instead of 0W20?

Interesting feedback to say the least. I wonder if anyone anywhere outside of his own circle knows what kind of test equipment he actually uses? I notice that he adamantly states that it is neither a “One Armed Bandit” tester and NOT a “4-Ball Wear Tester”. With all due respect, I will readily...

Would you use 0W30 instead of 0W20?

For some time, I have sensed an apparent/possible animosity between a few contributors to this thread and whoever it is that has the tech facts not myths web blog. If that is the case, then I will make myself very clear. Please do not draw me into any personal or professional issues between any...

Would you use 0W30 instead of 0W20?

YUP for sure !!! -and the link ZeeOSix referred to describes it very well.

Would you use 0W30 instead of 0W20?

ZeeOSix Thanks for sending the link to the machinery lubrication article !! The two paragraphs titled Film Thickness and Film Strength are outstanding. So as described, when film thickness alone cannot provide the needed protection, then we rely on film strength and boundary lubrication...

Would you use 0W30 instead of 0W20?

So Guys, that makes me ask this question: In your opinion, even with low viscosity numbers at 212F, (and very thin oil film), would an oil with extraordinarily high film strength still provide adequate protection? -like keep metal from touching metal in the crankshaft bearing journals. Thanks

Would you use 0W30 instead of 0W20?

Thanks again for the additional replies. Yes, sadly, the vast majority of this cars driving will be short trips well under 30 minutes. No doubt the 0W20 would be the totally logical choice overall. -and I will certainly be doing frequent oil changes for several reasons, not the least of which is...

Would you use 0W30 instead of 0W20?

Absolutely outstanding response "Ken" !!! Thank You !!! This is exactly the caliber of material I was hoping to find here on BITOG. Hey "doublebase", I just love your last sentence on your reply today at 1:57: " And I know I'm putting too much thought into this, I just don't care...it's an oil...

Would you use 0W30 instead of 0W20?

To walterjay, thanks for sharing the Shell Oils chart. To Silver, well I don't know. From what I remember reading about HTHS, it involves molecular shearing, which reduces the oil's viscosity index? Maybe someone else can answer that one. I am finding it quite educational as to how many...

Would you use 0W30 instead of 0W20?

Holy cow everyone !! (fitting for Wyoming,,, although I was never in any of those businesses,,,) What outstanding replies !! I would like to acknowledge each person, but for the sake of efficiency I'll just make a general reply to all. And maybe I need to first make these few comments: Please...

Would you use 0W30 instead of 0W20?

Yes kschachn, regarding your statement, "And it isn't magic that thinner grades were listed. It was a reasoned decision based on adequate MOFT under typical circumstances." I accept your absolutely valid point. But I still maintain that if there was not the "CAFE-factor" involved, then I'm...

Another good point. Thanks. -especially it spends winter nights in the heated garage.

Would you use 0W30 instead of 0W20?

Oh, sorry I also wanted to mention that I also read and appreciate the thick vs thin thread. Overkill really nailed it with his great information !! It is totally logical in my mind that to go up only one step on the hot viscosity rating should be very safe and makes good sense.

Would you use 0W30 instead of 0W20?

Great responses ! Thanks. Many good aspects to consider. Sorry for confusing the terms clearances and tolerances. In the year range I cited, the oil clearances were the same. However a weak argument could be made that the Quality Control Dept could have hopefully tightened up their tolerances...

Would you use 0W30 instead of 0W20?

Okay Folks, I have searched all over, and I didn't see this specific question addressed. (and forgive me for having already sort of explored this question in another person's posted question regarding mixing of the two grades.) My 2019 Equinox (1.5L turbo engine) specs 0W20 oil. I really...

-as stated above,,,"And, as seen with GM issues, even with a PD pump, certain filters can cause lower oil pressures and reduce flow in the engine. Someone refuses to admit to pump slip and overreacting pump dump bypasses caused by restrictive filters, especially when loaded. PD only works on...

Which Synthetics use group IV base stock?

Thank You bluefeb95 ! Where in the world do you find this stuff ?? Ah Ha, it is from the MSDS. And now, in the category of "believe it or not" (some more quotes for you all to enjoy) that is the exact product I picked up about 3 weeks ago, for our little 1.5t. -maybe for the next oil change in...

Which Synthetics use group IV base stock?

Your points are well taken, and in my opinion totally valid. My original purpose was to see if we could come up with a list of oils that are known to be based on Group IV base stock. It has been my understanding that very high quality synthetic base stocks require far less VI improvers, and in...
