    Bait and switch or not?

Saw an online dealership advertisement for a 2024 Volkswagen Taos S 4 motion vehicle. It was advertised @$21,XXX and in transit. MSRP is $28,000 so a $6500 discount from msrp. I contacted the dealership via email about this vehicle and the unrealistic price they promptly emailed me back and...

Best bang for the buck bi-directional scanner?

I have a drawer full of scanners, some reaching back to the original OBD port read only for Fords with EEC-IV. I also have laptop with VCDS and a dongle cable for VW's. I would like to get something that is not as cumbersome on VW's as VCDS and more intuitive without the huge risk of...

Torque number for 62TE pan bolts using gasket.

I forgot what I used last time. There are numbers all over the place on the internet. FWIW this Dorman pan with drain and WIX gasket hasn't leaked in 45k Miles since install. Most of the numbers I see are using different RTV's. Don't remember if factory pan was RTV or gasket. I'm old and it's...

    Just mowing the lawn...

On my FB feed. Mowed the lawn today, and after doing so I sat down and had a cold beer. The day was really quite beautiful, and the drink facilitated some deep thinking. My wife walked by and asked me what I was doing, and I said, "Nothing." The reason I said "nothing" instead of saying "just...

    Real world pickup fuel mileage?

At a frinds the other day and he was bitterly complaining about his Toyota pickup's fuel mileage. The truck is really nice, 4wd, double cab, red, and has the V6. Oh yeah, 2020 model. His claim is 16mpg freeway and about 13 around town. Is this comparable with other trucks of this era. My...

What is the going rate for an #80 tank of Stargon?

For my Miller Mig. Getting low. Don't use it much so that explains the lag between tanks. It's been near a decade since I got this tank and I remember almost swallowing my teeth at the cost, which I don't remember what that was. I own the tank and will just get an exchange. So, what's the bad news?

Are there any high performance models with CVT's?

I am always surprised how slow the 0-60 and 1/4 mile times are with CVT's. Even on relatively higher horsepower engines the numbers are pretty dismal. Can they be made to be as quick as torque converter transmissions or dual clutch transmissions with a software change?

Save me some time researching before I order fuel conditioner/cleaner.

I have used Red Line, Techron, Rislone and others over the years. Usually the Red Line a couple times a year in the injected gasoline vehicles I service. What is the best bang for the buck nowadays?

    Anyone remember Boeing surplus?

Back in the day, my dad and uncle who are rabid ham radio dudes used to travel and stay at my place to attend a ham radio show and always made it to Boeing surplus for all kinds of stuff. One year they both bought hundreds of large vacuum variable capacitors and inductors. By the pound. They...

Out with the HPL and in with the Valvoline

Break in oil has maybe 3 hours on it but is a couple years old. New VR1 and cheap Fram filter for the next couple years. Higher than stock valve spring rate pointed me toward the 20W50. Oil was actually darker than I was expecting, haven't cut open the Hastings filter for a look see yet.

Does this seem like a bargain?

Since I do 99% of my own maintenance/repair I was a little surprised about this ad. I am out of the loop. On that jeep they have pictured using walmart derived oil and filter it couldn't be much more than $40 worth of parts. Rotating tires using a lift, 15 minutes? What is the going rate for an...

Best option for CD transferring and burning....

Howdy, I have near 1000 music CD's. In the past with my older Lenovo PC that bought the farm a couple years ago, I would use the built in CD R/W to copy an entire CD and then pull single songs from many CD's I had downloaded. In essence making a mixtape. Pretty slow process with a magneto hard...
