    ATF Temp. Too Low?

I measure my ATF temp as it comes out of the TX for this reason: High temps kill the fluid. It doesn't matter what the average temp of the fluid is, it is the highest temp that it experiences that ruins it.

6 point vs. 12 point socket

A story I was told while an apprentice in a machine shop: Mr. Ford was know for doing business with his friends. When he wanted to us a screwhead which would hold the screwdriver to prevent slipping two of his friends offered ideas: Mr. Phillips the + design, Mr. Richardson the square indent. At...

What automotive gas engines do you currently own?

Kia 3.8 V6 Ford/Mazda KLDE 2.5 V6 American Motors 4.2 (258 c.i.) I6 All of which are trouble free. The 4.2 sounds so cool at idle - a deep, throaty "pop-pop-pop" which goes totaly quiet while driving. I

    Moonroof long-term durability

The only one I've ever lubed was the Probe GT, and only then because I was replacing the headliner and could get to everything - not because it needed it. I used white lithium grease after cleaning everything up with WD and a quick wipe with acetone to make sure the grease "stuck." It works...

    Moonroof long-term durability

Down here on the 28th Parallel they are great if you want the top of your head broiled or wet. During a summer day it's too hot and humid even if it's cloudy and not raining, and at night during the summer it's too humid to have the car opened. When the conditions are favorable in the winter to...

Opinions on Kia Sedona - son's near impulse buy

As of today we (my bride and I) have owned a '05 Sedona for two years and 38k miles. We have had it back once for a passenger side seat switch (it's the loaded and leather version, I don't recall if that is EX or LX - I drive a '73 Jeep most of the time). The engine is smooth, the ATX works like...

Fluid extractor for diff oil change

I do it on my Jeep, two diffs and the transfer case. Best to drive it a while to warm it up a bit, then start suckin' it out - don't get in a hurry, though. Don't pump the vacuum down a lot at one time, it'll just collapse the hose.

    Vinyl Repair kits....

If you're good at mixing colors, have some material and time to practice, you can match a small ding or hole in your upholstery, but it's not likely you'll be able to patch a hole in a tonneau with any certainty of satisfaction. An upholstery or sail shop should be able to repair it - probably...

    Dexron for '73 TH400?

I just bought a '73 Jeep which has a Turbo-Hydromatic 400 in it. This car has been sitting in a garage for 20 years. The gentleman who set it aside had put new fluids in it before storing it. I've gotten it running and have driven it a few slow miles. Are current Dexron IIIs and such gonna be...

    A/C refridgerant question...

I have two cars that use about 12oz a year. Not a big deal, but if I go to the local garage it's a big deal, $45 to $50 to have 12oz put in. I can do it myself in 20 minutes, save a day of driving back and forth to the garage (if they do it on time)and it costs about $4. Its not even worth the...

    NOW I'VE HEARD IT ALL

I would wager that he wasn't speaking official AZ policy, he was just speaking from his lifelong accumulated misinformation. Generally, if you know anything at all about a topic, you know more than 95% of the general population knows about it. If you've ever been quoted in the newspaper you...

    GOING CRAZY!!!

It doesn't drip, but you've spent three trips to get it "fixed"? I'd wipe it off every couple of months if the seepage bothered me (which it doesn't) - I don't care that much for reading waiting room magazines.

90-100deg temps, GC or 5w-40 for Miata.

We have three things in common: HLA noise at start-up, high summer temps, Mazda engine, though mine is a KL in a Probe GT. It's almost 11 years old, 135k miles. I'be been using Rotella T 5W40 for two years, year 'round, and the HLA is gone and I have no complaints about lubricity. I get 25 - 29...

    Tire protectants

I've used Armor-All Tire Foam on my Goodyear Eagles for the two and a half years of their life. The car has won 2 first places in national car shows, several 2nd and 3rds. I really don't care if it has silicone or not,I spray it on and walk away. I'll be replacing these tires this month, more...

    Armor All your Engine Bay

Rubber turns brown all on its own, doesn't need any help. I spritz my plastic under-hood parts with Armor-All a couple of times a year (and brush everything off with a soft pig-bristle 3" paint brush at every oil change), and spray the wheel wells with Son-of-a-Gun (cheaper than A-A) after...

5w40 Rotella too thick for OHC?

I've been using RTS in my Probe GT's KL series 24V DOHC engine for almost 2 years, since just after an AutoRx treatment. This engine is kinda picky and is known for HLA clatter if everything is not spick and span. I get many comments on the fact that you cannot hear the engine running at idle. I...

tom slick has the only solution I've found. I use Liquid Glass, which is the best variation in my experience.

What is operating temp for oil?

My Probe GT (2.5L v6) is generally around 195, though on the interstate at 70+ it stabilizes around 210. This car has a factory oil "cooler", which is a water to oil intercooler, so it is pretty close to coolant temp.

    combo vinyl and leather cleaner

Almost anything for leather will work OK on vinyl, but not necessarily vice-versa. Why not just use the appropriate cleaner for each?
