What are you working on today?

Did the timing belt/water pump job on my Golf. Last time was in 2014, yikes! The pump was leaking, but stopped, the car had sat a lot. But the belt had some cracking on the backside.

For me it was the cheapest 5w30 the farm supply store nearby had!

Glad I don't rely on shops for basic service.

Since I have started using the Permatex ceramic extreme lube I have not had a sticking caliper slide again or pads stuck in the bracket. Ontario winters are very hard on brake parts.

Transmission fluid interval 2019 Corolla will dump and replace cause damage at 22,000?

This is only accurate if you change the transmission fluid on a 300k beater that has never had a service in it's life. I would argue that most people on this board change their ATF frequently, as do I, and have never had these problems. The automatic transmission in my 2002 Xterra shifts like...

Transmission fluid interval 2019 Corolla will dump and replace cause damage at 22,000?

This is very good advice. Transmissions have no way to "consume" oil like a motor would. So if it was losing fluid, you'd see it somewhere.

Transmission fluid interval 2019 Corolla will dump and replace cause damage at 22,000?

I'm not sure how changing the fluid early would ever cause problems... I've done a spill and fill on every 30-40k or so for many years on my automatic vehicles.

AC shaft seal leak - Replace compressor or seal?

Since someone brought this back from the dead. I ended up finding the correct seal and replacing it myself after having a shop down the road recover the refrigerant. Pulled a vacuum on it for 1 hour, and charged it back up after replacing all the o-rings for good measure. The oil inside looked...

Do you care if a vehicle's hood has a prop rod?

The original gas strut (yes I say strut, it only ever had 1) on my 2004 golf still works to this day. I'm sure it'll fail anytime now that I've said this but it's nice to not have the prop rod in the way, but I'm also a fan of simplicity and not needing parts replaced. I miss the springs the...

Reminder to inspect oil bottles when buying at walmart.

I wish we could up here but the prices are just so crazy that it isn't worth it most of the time.

Anyone use Proton email service from the USA?

Realized that I missed this reply! Yes we have a static /27 block of IPs that we probably only use 10 of. The rest have literally never been used in years so they are as clean as can be. I have never had problems sending to G workspace or MS accounts. I deal with a lot of people using MS365 and...

Reminder to inspect oil bottles when buying at walmart.

As a Canadian I refuse to shop at Walmart. The stores here are often disgustingly dirty and the automotive section looks like it was just ransacked from black Friday. Canadian tire always has sales and perfectly neat shelves where you don't have to dig around.

Apparently Mazda is collecting data on connected cars…

Out of this entire thread this is what I want to know lol. Lunacy, lubrication, laser? :D The heck with Mazda. I loved the one my parents had in the early 90s (89 929 v6) but wouldn't buy one of their newer ones. At least you can still get some of their cars with a stickshift. There must be...

Anyone use Proton email service from the USA?

If you use the free version of google anything, they are constantly scanning and selling your metadata for advertising. Personally I refuse to use any service that does that so blatantly (facebook, etc). Just remember if the product is free, you are the product. Protonmail is great, lots of...

Have you changed your driving habits?

Stopped driving the Xterra that gets 15mpg and requires 91 octane and brought my Golf back into DD status. Realized it needs front struts and parking brake cables, so how much am I really saving? Definitely not ripping down the highway at 130km/h anymore either, and our summer off-roading trips...

    When do you top off?

I had a 2002 Xterra that the cats disintegrated on, and caused massive oil consumption as it scored the cylinder walls. It would drink a quart every tank of gas. Near the end I just started adding oil when I heard the lifters clattering or saw the idiot light come on at idle. Actually I would...
