    M1 vs PP for 0w20 H/M?

I've been using Mobil1 0w20 high mileage for my 02 Civic SiR on the last couple of oil changes. Runs nicely and seems to reduce the oil consumption. PP 0w20 H/M is on sale for half the price at Canuckistan Rubber. M1 has slightly higher Kinematic Viscosity @ 100C (8.8 vs. 8.5) Thoughts on...

Storing summer tires in crawl space, clear bags ok?

I have some summer tires that I want to store in a crawl space. I've cleaned and prepped the area with a shop vac and I'll lay down some cardboard. Is it okay to use clear construction bags to store them? It's just what I have. As far as I know, the purpose of using black or opaque bags is to...

Coolant leak parked in the cold

02 Honda Civic SiR. Bloody Canadian winter is here again. I noticed a coolant leak last year when it got pretty cold, leaked about 30mL (1 fl oz) a day when the temps dropped to -30C (-22F). I'm not sure if it's getting worse or if I'm misremembering, but it hit -16C (3F) last night and I found...

Overfilled, drained some, still too full?

Was a little hasty and overfilled my oil when changing it today. '02 Honda Civic EP3, uses the "two indicator holes" type of dipstick. I drained out the excess, but I'm wondering if I need to drain a bit more. Couldn't get a good picture of it without three hands, but this is an accurate...

Are these bushings rubber or poly? And what grease?

I bought a set of these for my stabilzer bar and I can't tell whether they're rubber or polyurethane. Google and manufacturer's website are no use. Do I need to grease them for installation? What type of grease should I use?

Used GC/bearing grease on ball joints

I foolishly listened to my old man telling me "oh yeah, that's strong stuff, just use it" when I borrowed his grease gun. Turns out it contains wheel bearing grease (this stuff, to be exact). I used it to grease my end links and outer tie rod ends. I'm replacing the links and one of the tie rod...

    Humming/Buzzing from tires or bearings?

Goodyear Eagle Sport All-Seasons. Tread is good, 9/32 in the middle, 8/32 the edges on all four tires. Tire ages range from 2.5 to 4 years. No cracks, dry rot or bulges. I'm hearing a humming/buzzing at about 40 km/h and higher. It's a "pneumatic" sounding noise, kind of like blowing air...

Tires older than I thought, how bad is this dry rot?

Seems I misread the date code when I bought the tires, and they're older than I thought They looked brand new with full tread, but the DOT code is 1809. All four tires look about the same as this. I don't see any similar dry rot in the tread. Tires are still soft and pliable. These are winter...

    5w30 in K20A3?

When I first changed oil in the Civic SiR (Canadian model) I picked up last year, I put in PP 5w20 High Mileage. They usually have Mobil1 as well, but I think they (Canadian Tire) were out of stock at the time. I'm sure either one is just fine. The manual states that it can accept 5w30, but...

Change K20 tensioner pulley without removing [censored]'y?

'02 Civic SiR, K20A3. Can I safely change the tensioner pulley without having to remove the whole tensioner assembly? How do torque the tensioner pulley bolt down to 41 lb-ft when the tensioner spring resistance is only 28 lb-ft?

Mechanics tell me this noise is "normal", but I find it annoying. What is it?

'02 Civic SIR / EP3 (Canadian model) Recording of sound I'm hearing The sound you're listening for is that high pitched, fluttery whistling sound. The pitch and volume of the sound are constant, regardless of ambient temperature, engine temperature, RPM, or road speed. The only time you'll...

Did the shop put the wrong coolant in my car?

02 Honda Civic EP3/SiR I noticed the coolant was a bit low, asked the shop to top it up while it was in the other day. The manual indicates to use Honda Coolant/Anti-Freeze Type 2 part # OL999-9011 only, which is blue. I specifically asked the shop to use the Honda coolant specified for this...

02 Civic SiR "ringing" sound ... normal?

Hey all, I picked up an 02 Civic SiR as a winter car. Fun little hatch I've noticed this "light ringing" sound under load. I would liken it to a constant cricket chirp or a dull bell, but quieter. Some notes to narrow it down: - The sound occurs in neutral, but much quieter - The sound does...

Is this rattle/buzzing noise just my exhaust leak?

video - works best with headphones (ignore my dumb voice, lol) Sorry, audio is lousy, lots of wind/road noise, I don't have any good recording gear. 2004 Infiniti G35, 6 speed manual, totally stock. I know I have an exhaust leak (flexpipe is a bit frayed in places and some gaskets could...

Shelf life of opened and unopened oil in trunk

I always leave a quart or two in the trunk for emergencies. Currently, I have one sealed (foil unbroken) and one unsealed bottle of Castrol 0w30 full synthetic. Are they still good to use on the next change? They've been there for probably 6-10 months in temperatures between about +30C and -30C.

Is there any reason *not* to use 0wX0 in summer?

I've been running Castrol 0w30 in my '04 Infiniti G35 for the last few year-round oil changes. Hasn't made a dent in the oil consumption, but it seems to run well otherwise. Is there any reason, aside from cost and availability, not to run it through summer? Does it really make a difference in...

Did I buy the right grease for sway bar end links?

I bought a set of Moog sway bar end links, which have a zerk grease fitting. I don't know much about grease, I bought this tube based on a review for the end links. It's NLGI GC-LB #2 spec and says it works for ball joints (which is basically what end links are, right?)

    Winter storage in a carport?

I've been debating in my head whether I want to pickup a winter beater and store my car, making it a spring/summer/fall car only. The only thing I have access to is a metal carport (where I currently park). I can pretty much seal up the ends with heavy duty tarp. The metal panels are ribbed...

Canadian Tire not carrying Castrol Edge FTT 0w-30?

Was at the local Canuckistan Donuts today to pickup a quart and it's not even labelled on the shelf. Didn't see it at Walmart either. Other Canadians, report?

Just changed oil, did something a bit stupid

Put in 4 qts, just pouring in from the bottles. That's fine. Topped it up a bit more with a measuring cup (bottle > cup > motor). I know there's a level on the bottle, it's just always hard to read. I poured it into the engine from the cup and I realized I forgot to wipe the inside of cup...
