Chevy 6.5L diesel - why so bad?

I always through they are not bad of a diesel, sure old school but good work horses. They are used in the Humvee. Only issue I can think of now is that parts for some things are getting hard to get. I ran across this with one of my customers that had an Blue Bird short bus converted to an RV...

Tesla's "unboxed" manufacturing - will it succeed?

One of the articles I read about Chrysler during its revival under Lee Iacocca in the 80s was actually an concept of an car built in modules by passing around suppliers then coming to final assembly in an plant that was 1/4 the size.

'BEST' jump start technique out of the 4 methods I typed out below?

All of them have their place. When I did roadside, a common one on factory AGM batteries mainly in BMW and Mercedes vehicles where I had to attach both the jump pack and the jumper cables from my tow truck as the AGM battery just was being dumb. I found out from an BMW dealer tech that I...

Outrageous Dealer Add-Ons and Fees - When Will They Learn?

I wanted to keep it under 5000 for sure as its what I had. I ended up finding for 3000 oddly enough an 2010 T&C that just needed tires from an private sale. Took it to where I was working at the time, got a deal on nice Nokians on it for 700ish. Only thing before I really replaced it on it was...

Outrageous Dealer Add-Ons and Fees - When Will They Learn?

Thinking more about the "documentation fee" on dealer vehicles, I remember when I was hunting down an Town & Country, I used my dealer connections to find an 2012 T&C with DVD player and the good factory radio with 2nd gen Uconnect (I'm blanking on the TLA for the model off the top of my mind)...

Outrageous Dealer Add-Ons and Fees - When Will They Learn?

Some of the dealer add-ons made sense for a while; my grandmother before she stopped driving, she would was willing to pay sticker back in the day if the dealer put those add-ons in at no extra cost. It was her favorite tactic to negotiate prices, she could figure out real quick what they see...

    OE alternators

Who does even remans domestically? I was told recently from an buyer for an truck shop that even the decent reman outfits in Mexico don't even do a true rebuild anymore and instead if its not an easy reman, they will just break it up for parts and recycling.

Jump starter not starting newer AGM equipped cars

When I did roadside work (I may get back into that on the side...) I actually wanted to build my own jump box after running into the same issue with some AGM batteries, it was in particular the factory installed batteries where they just are dead. The idea I had was actually a semi-luggable box...

Rebuilt my PCM at home for three bucks

I love this stuff, I used to repair GM truck ECUs the same way and clone those tuner EEPROMs for friends. I'm going to start tackling rebuilding TIPM units on Caravans for a taxi fleet here...

    Oldest battery (ICE vehicles)?

When I did roadside battery installs, ran across an Group 35 Champion battery from 1998 in 2018 complete with Dale Sr’s photo on it…

    Vietnam Tire factory

Interesting video….I remember when the Firestone Tire recall of 2000 was all the rage, reading how their tires are made at the Decatur, IL plant; it sounded like it was like running a blacksmith shop with all the labor involved…

Die Hard Group Size H6 - Made in China?

Small electrical connector for the 3.6L Pentastar VVT actuator - $92

Any Chrysler I think after 2007 uses a lot of connectors from Bosch. I used to go to salvage yards and look in Mercedes for connector and splice it in. If I could never find one, I would just bypass the connector and splice wires straight together…

    I love when this happens

Now I have time again! Yeah, I’m very familiar with the right filter from my 2005, I always went with the WIX 51085 which is the right one so when I got in there and saw that smaller one, I was very very very confused. The VIOC my dad went to, was one of the locations that used to be an Oil...

    I love when this happens

So my father gave me his 2006 Grand Cherokee with the 5.7 Hemi. I’m familiar with this generation as a long time Jeep man and also owned at one point a 2005 model. Father said he hasn’t done in oil change in quite some time so naturally I do it myself. Last time he did it, he went to a...

Amazon TPMS did not make 5 years.

I know on my 2005 Grand Cherokee, the TPMS system is from TRW Automotive; I think later in the WK era they switched to Denso.

Can you bench test an alternator?

The PCM input on most alternators is actually easy to fool; I know on Chryslers which have been externally regulated since the late 80s, all the PCM input is basically a variable resistor to ground using the temperature sensor data. You can actually ground the green alternator input wire usually...

LoL, ask me how much O'Reilly brand alternators suck. Go ahead - AMA!

I was going to say Exide is the same boat, their battery quality took a huge dive when a VC firm took over; that’s why Interstate started to go back to Clarios for product. Heck, go back further, when GM spun off Delco Remy; a Gordon Gecko type split off everything the weirdest way; Johnson...

Another AGM battery brand is now made in Germany....Interstate.

Interesting; I have a contact who works at the Clarios Plant in Canby, OR. I shall ask him. Delkor is another interesting operation as that was started under Delco Remy when GM started investing in Daewoo and Isuzu. I think they also have an Australian plant that originally supplied to Holden.
