Can anyone share an anecdote of a bad experience you had from running too thin an oil?

I'm not talking UOA came back questionable. I'm talking, you ran too thin an oil for your application and have a strong indication it did damage.

    NOACK volatility of straight weight

Anyone have any idea what the NOACK value is for straight weights? I would think they are good as there is no VII but also they could be lower quality base stocks potentially?

    Fram 0w-30

Anyone try it yet? Any idea who makes it for them? Not a bad price as long as its a little bit more stable than Mobil 1 AFE 0w-30...

What oil temps would require a more viscous grade?

Say for a car that will be used on a hot track. What oil temps would be high enough that you would need to step up a grade? Or is it more oil pressure related?

    Supertech synthetic gear oil

About 2 years ago I changed my differential fluid and used ST synthetic 75w-90. I am coming up on 30k miles since that change. Wondering if anyone can comment on if this is a "good" gear oil or not.

    Has anyone used EnviroSafe refrigerant?

https://www.es-refrigerants.com/ Proclaims to be environmentally friendly, blow cooler air, and uses 1/2 as much refrigerant. Curious if anyone has used this before.

    Anyone else pre-soak the filter?

On both my vehicles I always pre soak the filter media in clean oil before installing it. Neither has a vertical mounted filter that I could fill; one is a top mount Subaru and the other a side mount Toyota catridge style filter. I picked up this habit from a relative who was an engineer and...

    Cheapest 5w-20?

I have a short commute, maybe 15 min all stop and go. A lot of short trip driving all around. I want to run a super-cheap 5w-20 and just change it as often as I can. The cheapest i can find is at Tractor supply, 5 qt jug for $11. Can anyone find cheaper? I would like to keep it 5w-20 as the oil...

Is a weekly long drive enough to entirely counteract short-trip issues?

Say 30-45 min dully warmed up at 55mph. Is this enough to prevent acidification, excessive water buildup, fuel dilution, etc. Especially in the winter?

Is bar and chain oil hard on rubber?

I have thought about using it as an undercoating, but am concerned about if it eats rubber. Any experience?

Anyone use 0w-16 in a car calling for anything thicker?

I am considering it, being that my car never sees operating temperature in the winter thanks to a short commute. Also trying to see if 0w-16 and 0w-20 can be safely mixed

    Found in NC: SuperTech 0w-16!

Much to my surprise in a very warm climate, I found SuperTech 0W-16. Not only am I amazed that SuperTech sells this grade, I'm extra suprised this thin of an oil is sold this far south. They also had 1 shelf slot of Mobil 1 AFE 0W-16, but the shelf was mostly dominated with 5W-20, xW-30's, and...

Thicker or thinner oil better for short-change flush OCI

If you had a car that was neglected, say the old owner ran long OCI's on cheapo bulk oil and it was sludgy. You want to run a short OCi, and at the end throw in an engine flush like Kreen to get the sludge out. Thinner or thicker better? My knowledge of how solvents work says thinner, my...

Kreen harsh on fuel system components?

My father has a Kia Borrego with 109k on it. Clear issues from carbon buildup and sludging. We ordered Kreen to run thru the oil, but I'm wondering how safe it actually is if put in the gas tank. That is nasty stuff, and I don't want a melted fuel filter / disintegrated fuel lines from it.
