I bought another bike with 1/3 the cc

Nice looking bike and reasonably light weight too at 170KG. It's good to see a new mid range bike that will be fast enough for many and light enough for 70+ year olds to keep riding. In the UK the exact same bike is 25% more expensive. Not sure what we do to deserve that, perhaps some of it is...

Sleep schedule differences between you and significant other.

My wife is in bed an hour and a half before me and sleeps for 9.5 hours. We get up at the same time. My main motivation for going to bed later is I refuse on principle to spend more than 1/3rd of my life in bed.

Best toilet for my new house?

I recently did 3 bathrooms and my golden rule was not made in China. In the UK market a lot of bathroom stuff is Chinese these days and it's mostly rubbish. For toilets I bought RAK Ceramics

Plumbing house repipe, copper or PEX?

I understand why plumbers only use PEX now because it's cheaper and very much faster. The one thing I have against PEX is the bulk of the fittings. If you need to hide pipes in bathrooms for example then copper particularly with end feed fittings is much slimmer. I wonder what happens to all...

Putting gravel over lawn - any landscape experts?

It seems to me that the question is, do you want the new area to be level with the existing grass or above it. Raising up the new area creates a tripping hazard and a problem for mowing up to that edge. I would sink it for sure even though its a lot of work to excavate.

Why do people use the rear brake?

There are all sorts of scenarios where it can be argued that one brake or the other does an adequate job in normal or low speed riding and there is nothing wrong with that, except using both as a matter of habit prepares you for that emergency when maximum braking is needed. If you don't...

Why do people use the rear brake?

I don't suppose this is as much of an issue on modern bikes but before 1980 it was uncommon to have the brake light actuated by both the front brake and the rear brake. I don't recall front brakes having a brake light switch back in the 60's and 70's although my 79 BMW does. Applying both...

Good over the air tv antenna?

At UHF frequencies there can be a huge difference in performance between an indoor or Attic mounted antenna and an outdoor antenna. I'd always go for an outdoor location as the antenna can then be simpler and cheaper because of the extra height and lack of attenuation from the building fabric...

Why do people use the rear brake?

Always use both brakes even for gentle braking to maintain the correct habit. Locking up either brake is a recipe for an off. Those that use the rear brake only should be shown a video of a high side. If you lock the rear and the rear drifts sideways as a result, which it often will, then...

Explain dry-sump to me - does the sump auto level itself?

That's correct , just keep the oil reservoir topped up. You don't mention the bike but with old dry sumped Brits, the problem was not too little oil in the sump but too much, as oil migrated down when the bike had been stood for a while. In those circumstances you wouldn't want to add more oil...

    Towing w/ 4-Cylinder Turbo

While it's correct to say drag is proportional to the square of the speed, the power required to overcome that drag is proportional to the cube of the speed and it's power that we are concerned with. So even more important to slow down.

    Need help understanding torx types

My car is full of E Torx fastners. While I had a good range of T Torx bits I had no E Torx sockets at all so I set about looking to buy some. What really confused me was even though both use the exact same form, the E Torx sizes do not correspond to the internal sizes. For example, an E8...

    Honda Shadow Differential

I don't think it's anything to do with copper alloys. Motorcycles are usually a spiral bevel drive so not hypoid. I've asked myself the same question - why GL5 if it's not a hypoid drive. My BMW is the same, it's spiral bevel but GL5 is recommended. Given GL5 has more of the same additives as...

    One of Mercedes dumber ideas.

My C class with a m271 engine is exactly the same. Cleanest oil change on any car I've ever had by far. It's a great design that allows you to everything from above.

Is there a reason why the back rows of flights are always unavailable?

When I flew to Malta on holiday a month back with Easy Jet on an A320, I refused to pay extra for choosing standard seats and opted for seat allocation on check in. I reasoned that load planning would be part of the seat allocation algorithm and they might work from the centre outwards fore...

Oil ingress in BMW VVT sensor

A similar sort of problem occurs with Mercedes M271 engine and some other Mercedes engines. To prevent the oil migrating via the cable from the cam shaft adjuster to the ECU, an oil stop cable is available to insert into the cable harness.

Modern Turbo Engine Reliability and Durability

Modern engines with forced induction have so much more torque at very low revs that they are designed to cope, with beefed up crank bearings. While there are some exceptions I haven't the slightest concern that the bottom end in my car is going to wear out because it has forced induction...

Replacing a leaky natural gas valve

One way to do a leak test on completion of any work on a gas system: Hook up a manometer, there is a test point on my system for this. Turn off all gas appliances so no gas is being consumed. Record the system gas pressure Isolate the system at the incoming isolation valve. If the pressure...

    Oobleck fork oil.

If I've understood what this Oobleck stuff does, in damper rod forks where the damping already rises exponentially with speed, a fluid that thickens under stress is the exact opposite of what is needed.

    Fork oil differences besides viscosity?

Viscosity index would seem important for fork oil unless you want damping force to change radically with temperature. That suggests to me a good synthetic oil. What is the viscosity index of ATF compared with fork oil ?
