    Good years for used Rav4?

A family member is looking to buy a used Rav4 in the $3-$4K (CDN) range. I think 2nd gen (2001-2005) would be a better option to avoid the timing belt of the first gen. Would appreciate any feedback regarding problem areas to watch.

    Mazda 3 - 5w40?

A family member has a 2009 Mazda 3 manual 2.0L with 299K KM's (186K miles). We've used 5w30 because it seems to consume oil between changes (could be close to 1L over 8K KM's). I didn't see the Euro part and bought this oil tonight: Quaker State Euro Full Synthetic 5W-40 Motor Oil, 5-L Here's...

2007 Honda Civic - new acquisition

In June of this year (2021) I purchased an original owner 2007 Civic EX 5sp, 201K KM's. I've driven it about 8K KM's so far. This vehicle has been dealer serviced and I expected it to easily soar past 400K. Cons: - Anemic engine with torque only in 4K-6K range (which isn't useful) - Plastic...

    2004 Sienna headgasket leaking.

We purchased a 2004 Sienna in 2012 with 161K KM's, and it now has 347K KM's. While under the van yesterday I noticed pink coolant dripping from back of engine. Yeah ... that's not a good sign. I like my coolant leaks near the front of the engine, where I can fix them. lol It appears to be...

    Mazda 3 - 1st gen review after ~3yrs

I bought a 2007 Mazda 3 manual hatchback in 2018 with 345K KM's and it just rolled over to 400K KM's. Since that time, 2 more 1st gen Mazda 3's (2004 and 2006) have been added to our fleet. Here are some thoughts after 50K KM's Positive: - Excellent handling and suspension design, very fun...

    Mann ML1002 – cut open 17K KM's

This is run past service life, but is consistent with 2 Bosch 3300's I've dissected. Torn first pleat at top and bottom. This is run 17K Km's on a Honda accord. I've switched to Wix.

    P0328 code - 2004 Sienna

2004 Sienna @ 260K KM's throwing P0328 code. I haven't seen anything specific for this vehicle. This has me stumped, and I'm not confident replacing the knock sensor will solve problem. Quote: P0328 Knock Sensor Circuit High Input A P0328 code is a generic DTC, thus it applies to all makes...

    Leaving Fayetteville, North Carolina

I received my batch of of WIX 51348 filters from Rockauto ... After I've used up my batch of Bosch 3330 and then Mann, I'm done with easily-torn filter media. I'll cut this one after 8K KM's and conduct a post mortem.

    Mann ML1003 cut open

2004 Sienna with 240K KM's, filter on for 8K KM's or ~4 months. I'm using up my current stash and then I'm done buying anything from this plant (Purolator, Mann, some of the Bosch). The media is still weak and easily prone to tearing.

Mann ML1002 - post mortem with pics

I was leery of using this filter, thinking that it probably came off of the same assembly line as my beleaguered Bosch 3330 (that had tears). This was fine - all media intact. Duration: 9K KM's Vehicle: 2004 Sienna 220K KM's

2004 Sienna - Water pump post mortem pics

210K KM's 2004 Sienna. The water pump was leaking and rattling at idle, and I knew it needed imminent replacement. Before I could order parts the belt tore and stranded a family member on side of hwy. My guess is that the worn pump bearing allowed the tbelt to walk on to the lip of the pulley...

1993 Honda Accord - Driver side water leak

1993 Honda Accord SE 2dr. After many hours of investigating a driver's side water leak, I have identified the source. First steps were ensuring clear evaporator drain, sunroof drains etc .. then onto removing windshield cowling and front fender. The leak was coming through the sunroof drain...

Bosch 3330 cut open Part II [no tears]

Here is the first Bosch 3330 I cut @ 16k km's with tears: link I was leery of a repeat failure, so I ran the following filter to ~7k km's. Filter ID is F06D07D2. The filter was fine, no tears and I'm happy with the result. Will run the next Bosch 3330 to recommend Sienna oil change interval of...

    Bosch 3330 cut open

I cut open a Bosch 3330 filter this AM. A few observations - first, the can is thin at .33mm (.013"). Not a significant concern. This filter was run over 2 oil changes, and the pics illustrate media tearing near both end caps. The media seemed weak and torn away easily from end caps. It's a...

    New XP image

I need to re-image my XP partition. I have a fairly recent backup image that I can retrieve, as well as all of the files copied to a separate drive last night. I want to wipe out partition, and re-install. I am unclear as to how to reinstall my data though, as XP was suffering from "windows...

Proto 3/8" long handle flex head ratchet

I borrowed a Proto 5257A 3/8" drive flex head ratchet from work .. first decent flex head I've used. http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=108000 It's too long (11") and hard to navigate - I don't like it. I see that Proto has shortened this model to 8 1/2" J5257F

    Lenovo customer service

I am trying to purchase a laptop through Lenovo outlet in the USA ... caveat: I'm Canadian. After assurances this would work from Sales and online chat, I changed my shipping and billing addresses to match in the USA. I've done this before for USA purchases. But the transaction continues to...

    Postmortem Mann W917 - 19K KM's

Mann W917 filter - Made in Germany. In service on a 1989 Volvo 740 turbo with 298,000KM. Filter on vehicle ~18 months and 19,531KM. These filters are very well built, and in my opinion easily able to handle this duration. It showed no signs of delamination from paper media to end cap. Oil was...

Sienna alarm won't stop after battery replacement

I think this is an aftermarket system, since I have a separate bill for the install. No toggle switches on dash though. When I close the door the alarm goes off now - since battery replacement. I've disconnected the horn for now - but all of the usual tricks of turns the door locks, key FOB...
