Been using Mobil 1 5w-50 for years in my pre-war MG race engines. Add a shot of ZDDP to get it to 1800 ppm and it is perfect once I have added a dash of Castor oil to get the correct fragrance. Never had an oil related engine failure, just everything else.

From looking on the Mobil web site, the Mobil 0w-40 Euro Spec is the only LL-01 approved product so it would be an acceptable option for the BMW.
